The cities and college towns stayed blue, and Iowa City is as blue as they come. Ames less so, but it's still the blue dot in the Iowa 4th. Plenty of Chicago land people go to U of I, and plenty of Omaha people go to ISU.

The really rural parts were always red and have stayed there.

But there's a ton of small cities in the 25-75k range (Dubuque, Decorah, Fort Dodge, etc) and those all flipped from working class blue to MAGA red (excluding Sioux City which was always hard red) after Obama. Add to that the blue parts are spread out just enough to prevent them from being in the same congressional district to guarantee at least one dem, and you get the current situation.

The one bright spot is that the only parts of the state that are growing are the 3-major metro areas (Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, to a lesser extent Counciltucky aka Omaha) and the college towns, aka the blue spots. The bright red areas are all losing population. So it'll flip back to purple at some point.

This last go around was also a nightmare because the Dem's governor candidate sucked, Jesus himself could've run against Grassley and still lost by 20 points, and their coattails carried everything down ticket.
 
Iowa has been red for a while. Same with Ohio. I’ve already written them off on a national level. From the outside, Tim Ryan appeared like a good fit for the state, and even he couldn’t get it done.
Disagree about NC turning blue. I think it’ll stay purple for a long, long time, even a twinge red, due to their state House/Senate both being Republican-controlled (for decades), NC Supreme Court 5-2 GOP, with four of the last five seats going to the GOP, and their national delegation led by Republicans in House/Senate. They have a Democratic Governor, so, basically like Kentucky.
As for Texas, that’s been allegedly turning blue since you were voting for independents. I won’t hold my breath on that one. Excited to see how Colin Allred does though.

I mean this is true in CA and NY and VT too.

Population density varies directly with education.

Rural people in MS or KS are no more ignorant than rural people in CT or OR. They just have more say, so they get to be stupid at higher levels of exposure, thus embarrassing their states.

Educated and intelligent people are the same everywhere. They're just not evenly distributed.

They are all doubling down on abortion. Even Christie which was a surprise. Hopefully ALL suburban women with brains reject all of them.

My recent favorite are the old white hags in Florida who supported desantis messing with alimony rules - because they thought it would only affect younger women as they’d be grandfathered in. But they’re not- their alimony is affected so now they swear they’ll vote d.

It never ceases to amaze. We need a Tsunami at the ballot box for people to really wake up and it just refuses to happen. Minnesota and Michigan kind of got there and we see the results. We'll see if it gets any sustain and spread to the rest of the country.

If the electoral system was responsive to actual voter preference on policy this would be a bigger wave than 1932. But the fix is in. The EC and Senate are tilted towards rural ignoramuses. The House seats are all fixed and safe. Most importantly, Republican voters are within such a bubble of epistemic closure they will never connect their problems with the reactionary interests who cause them.

There is no way to effect a sea change and realign our politics to the real values and interests of voters. We need a significant reform to further democratize the United States and break the chokehold of the wealthy.
 
If that was the case the Midterms would have gone differently. If everything is rigged, why do the people rigging it keep losing? Because the majority of voters don't fall into the loud bubbles on each side.

No wonder you defend Nate Silver so much. He is as defeatist and out of touch with the average voter as you are. At least you don't have terrible COVID takes that you double down on so you got him beat there.
 
The fix to the house and the EC is to expand the house by 2 or 3x. It hasn't expanded in over 100 years even as population has exploded.

The Senate is what it is, unfortunately.

Same with the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is undersized. Even the Senate. We now refuse to add States even though we had been doing it all along. DC and Puerto Rico are long overdue.
