The "I Can't Believe There's No Abortion Thread" Part Deux: Electric Boogaloo

I made a comment the day after the Orange Menace was elected that we were headed for the dark ages. One of the posters on here accused me of being histrionic and theatrical. Nope. I was spot on. Healthcare is completely compromised in a number of States. Education that would allow women to learn how to prevent pregnancy is severely curtailed. Access to care of any sort is really diminishing in the same States and the stats re public health (which were always embarrassing in these cesspools) are now so bad it is truly shocking even if you were cynical to start with.

The spread of endorsed ignorance, censorship, authoritarianism is frightening. This is the stuff we (boomers) read about in the Weekly Reader as children- countries behind the iron curtain, Maoist China suppressing what the masses wanted and claiming it was for the greater good. We were taught to feel sorry for those poor people who were stuck not having free will, control over their lives or bodies, unable to access real information, having censored books, media, etc.

I keep thinking of Heartsease by Peter Dickinson- Dystopian book where the people reject anything modern- medicine, machinery, etc and demonize anything modern even if it causes harm to reject it.

Hey be nice SJHovey isn't here to defend himself!

Just going to leave this here...

I would love to believe Dobbs leads inevitably and quickly to the complete death of the GOP and a new Era of Good Feelings, where the 70% of us who are sane agree to shut the 30% of orcs completely out of the political process. 51% of almost every district is female.

But Death Cult Brainwashing controls most of rural America, and without education the women in those communities appear happy to be brainless, docile broodsows.

I suppose this is a bad time to note that The Era of Good Feelings was anything but, and was immediately followed by the Jacksonian Era...

I take exception to this. Not convinced women are "happy" or that they are "brainless, docile broodsows". How much choice do these women actually have? There is a huge difference between knowingly accepting this is the way things are and being unaware there are other options, being able to find somewhere where these options are available and being able to survive without significant risk to the ability to live without support.

I often tell the story of one of my classmates in nursing school. She was in her 40s. Had grown up going to parochial schools, went to a Catholic college for Nursing and then worked at a Catholic hospital. She lived in a city which was predominantly Catholic with a newspaper and radio that fit the Catholic model. She was on her 5th child, sobbing, when a nurse told her about birth control. She was completely unaware it existed. Her description of discovering her ignorance and her struggle to fit this into the world she thought she knew was an epiphany moment for many of us who hadn't grown up insulated.

Yes, this was yrs ago but it is possible some of the women you reference are in similar environments. My Uncle, a more open minded individual living in IN often is completely unaware of things that are saturating what I would consider mainstream media. The available media in his area is Faux news. He knows they are not trustworthy but he often is unaware of things they don't report. You have to be aware to ask questions.

Longwinded way of saying it is possible the women are unaware but to call them brainless, docile, broodsows is offensive and makes assumptions that may not be at all correct
