The "I Can't Believe There's No Abortion Thread" Part Deux: Electric Boogaloo

The fix to the house and the EC is to expand the house by 2 or 3x. It hasn't expanded in over 100 years even as population has exploded.

The Senate is what it is, unfortunately.

Add more states. Puerto Rico, DC for starters. I don't know how we combine the 8 states in the empty middle of the country but that should be done somehow.

Has to pass through Congress and all states involved would have to agree and approve it.

You need 3/4s of Congress right? I guess it is fair to say we will never get that. Just too many racist states.

1. The inhabitants of the proposed new state are imbued with and are sympathetic toward the principles of democracy as exemplified in the American Constitution.

2. A majority of the electorate wish for statehood.

3. The proposed new state has sufficient population and resources to support state government and carry its share of the cost of Federal Government.[SUP][8][/SUP]

Simple majority to pass through Congress, with the usual cloture requirement in the Senate. So, 60 Senators. Still unlikely though not impossible.

Combining states won't add more states. But, we could split California into about five states. A couple of Connecticut sized states around LA and the Bay area, and three more for the rest of the territory.

Yeah yeah, we know what your game is in splitting up CA. We do that, you gotta let in DC and combine some of those plains states that would still result in one of the smallest states population-wise.

I would actively discourage any self-respecting young woman from enrolling at schools in states that have severe abortion restrictions like the 6-week bills.

I had a conversation last week with a waitress who was considering moving to TN. I responded something to the effect that if I was a young woman, I would avoid moving to TN. She looked at me blankly and I said that I was retired from healthcare and the medical situation in TN was scary and particularly scary for women (avoided mentioning abortions). She said she had never thought of it but she had multiple medical problems she would need to consider that.

I was careful to not mention abortions but the thought that any woman of childbearing age would move to a place with restricted GYN care makes my hair stand on end. It isn't just about abortions- With all the non-medical people passing judgment on what is appropriate medical care, the bleeding of medicals out of those States, the lack of available care- all the no's

Yeah, I have a friend if pretty rural indiana who can't find specialists without going all the way to Indianapolis. It's always been a bit of an issue there but one by one she's seen them retiring without anyone new taking over.

I mean, why would a med school grad choose to do their residency in a red state unless they are from there and want to stay?

Why would any grad? We are approaching the time when the only intelligent people remaining in red states will be there because of government grants at universities or government projects like Huntsville. Having politically bifurcated on intelligence, next will come geographic bifurcation.
