The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

#11 - Jeff Jackson
Coached at Lake Superior State from 1990-1996
Coached at Notre Dame from 2005-present
Jeff Jackson comes in at #11. Jackson began his career at the D-1 level at LSSU. He took over for Frank Anzalone, and picked up right where Frank left off. In his 6 seasons at LSSU, Jackson never had a losing season, won 20+ games in every season, and won 30+ games in 5 of the 6 seasons. In each season, the Lakers made the NCAA Tournament, and in 1992, 1993 and 1994 went to the Frozen Four. In 1992, Jackson led the Lakers to their 2nd National Championshp overall, defeating Wisconsin in the title game. In 1993, Jackson's Lakers took the greatest team ever to the brink of defeat. Unfortunately for Jackson, Maine was able to come back and win by a goal. In 1994, Jackson had LSSU back in the title game, this time defeating Boston University for their 3rd National Championship, and Jackson's second. After two more successful seasons, in '95 and '96, Jackson left LSSU. He would return to the D-1 ranks in 2005, taking over at Notre Dame. There were struggles his first season, as Jackson suffered his first ever losing season. However, in Jackson's second through fourth seasons at Notre Dame, he led the Irish back to the national stage. In 2007, Notre Dame was the #1 seed, and had a 32 win season. In 2008, Jackson led Notre Dame to the title game, but fell to Boston College in Denver. In 2009, Notre Dame hit the 30+ win total, and made the NCAA tournament. While the Irish struggled in 2010, Jackson had Notre Dame back in familiar territory for Jackson this past season. Jackson led Notre Dame back to the Frozen Four, but they were unable to get past Duluth, who eventually won the National Championship. All together, Jackson has coached for 12 seasons, has only 2 losing seasons, 10 20+ win seasons, 8 30+ win seasons, 5 Frozen Fours, 4 Title games and 2 National Championships. If Jackson can continue this pace, and if he coaches for awhile longer, he will most certainly jump into the top 10. As for now, Jackson sits on the cusp at #11.

Points: 158.80

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

As we head to the Top 10, I'll propose a contest (similar to the top-10 contest I had for the greatest programs).

Here is the contest information...

1.) All entries must be received by 2:00pm Eastern Time Saturday, April 23rd.
2.) Starting at 2:30pm Eastern Time Saturday, April 23rd, the Top 10 will be announced. Here is the schedule for the Top 10 to be released (all times are Eastern)...

#10 - 2:30pm
#09 - 3:00pm
#08 - 3:30pm
#07 - 4:00pm
#06 - 4:30pm
#05 - 5:30pm
#04 - 6:00pm
#03 - 7:00pm
#02 - 8:00pm
#01 - 8:00pm

3.) Here is how points will be calculated...

If you get the exact position correct:
#10 - 10 points
#09 - 15 points
#08 - 25 points
#07 - 40 points
#06 - 60 points
#05 - 85 points
#04 - 115 points
#03 - 150 points
#02 - 190 points
#01 - 235 points

If you correctly pick between slots 7-10: 12.5 points/selection
If you correctly pick between slots 4-6: 30 points/selection
If you correctly pick between slots 1-3: 45 points/selection

What this means is that if you pick Coach A to finish 8th, and they finish 9th, you would receive 12.5 points. If you had picked Coach A to finish 9th, you would receive 27.5 points. If you pick Coach B to finish 5th, and they finish 6th, you would receive 30 points, where if you had picked Coach B to finish 6th, you would receive 90 points. That means that the max total would be 1200 if you got the list exactly correctly. If you have no exact correct picks, but are able to correctly place each coach within their band, you would receive 275 points.

So, if you are interested, please post your top-10 picks by 2:00pm Eastern, tomorrow.

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

Please not everybody at once! :p:D:D

I'll say we'll need at least 10 entrants in order to go forward with the contest.

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

3 UM coaches 13-21 and none in the top 10. What could have been...

If Herb Brooks would have coached longer at the D-1 level, he would have been in the top 10. Lucia is still coaching, so could still make that jump. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, Doug Woog is arguably a post away from being one of the best coaches of all-time. The thought behind that, is that if Woog had won it all in '89, it would have bought him time for those down seasons, and had he produced the same level of success as Lucia in '02 and '03, we might be talking about Woog as a top 3-5 coach of all-time. Of course, if that was the case, nobody at Minnesota would care at all about Don Lucia, and Scotty Owens might be just some goofing looking assistant. Unfortunately for Woog that puck DID hit the post, and Harvard won the game.

You know, I would like to, but to be perfectly honest, I don't know that much about the coaches. So this whole thread is far more educational than anything else.

On that note, I'm pretty suprised that Berenson will end up higher than some that have been listed already- and based on what you are saying- it's due to the longevity of very high success. Not the highest- just twice did he do that. And we've seen some 3 time champions so far. So I'm not going to get into a debate over the order of your list, but read the comments and learn about the coaches.

BTW, if you want to add more text to the information, please feel free!!! I would nominate this thread for an all timer, since there's a lot of rich information here. Great stuff.

I've been following with interest, despite my misstep, and I just do not know enough about the overall history of Division I hockey to be able to join. I do appreciate all the work you've done to compile the list.

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

Here are the coaches that were in the top 50 that have not been named yet (remember, active coaches from 26-50 were honorable mention).

Al Renfrew
Amo Bessone
Brad Buetow
Charlie Holt
Cooney Weiland
Dick Bertrand
Edward Jeremiah
Frank Anzalone
George Menard
Gino Gasparini
Harry Cleverly

John Mariucci
Mark Morris
Mike Addesa

Murray Armstrong
Ned Harkness

If people want to still do the contest so that we'll finish this list today, I'll extend the deadline for entries until 4:00pm Eastern Time (each coach's release time will be two hours later). If not, then we'll just keep it at the same pace of about 1 coach per day.
