The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

Great job FS23. Can't argue much with your rankings based on accomplishments.

Gotta say though, if I had to choose one coach to coach my team out of those listed, it would be Herb Brooks.

I have never seen another coach get more out of their players.

The biggest thing that keeps Brooks "down" (he is still a top 15-20 coach according to the formula) is that he only coached at the D-1 level for 7 seasons. I would guess that if we looked at coaches on a points/year approach (say minimum of 5 years) that Brooks would be considerably closer to the top, if not #1. When I finish up posting all the numbers, I'll do maybe a top 10 or so based on points/year.

And let the updates begin...

Active coaches outside the top 25: (last year's rank/points in parenthesis)
#27 (27) - Mike Eaves - 62.9661 (62.1095)
#28 (28) - Dave Hakstol - 57.1548 (53.9306)
#29 (31) - Scott Sandelin - 56.9389 (51.8216)
#36 (36) - Tim Whitehead - 47.0965 (45.1780)
#37 (38) - Enrico Blasi - 44.7507 (42.9097)
#45 (46) - Mike Schafer - 34.6968 (32.7964)
#48 (48) - Scotty Owens - 29.2752 (29.2227)
#51 (62) - Bob Daniels - 24.0535 (6.5480)
#55 (54) - Wayne Wilson - 16.3342 (16.1449)
#61 (60) - Rand Pecknold - 8.1614 (8.0475)
#67 (67) - Walt Kyle - 3.3728 (3.3047)
#69 (68) - Seth Appert - 1.2779 (1.4620)
#75 (75) - Gary Wright - -2.3475 (-2.1892)
Surprised how close Sandelin and Hak are in the listings

Totally agree. He was a fast burning star on the college scene. That would be great if you could do a pts/yr ranking later. It would be neat to see how he stacks up that way :)

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

#17 George Gwozdecky played for #12 Bob Johnson and was an assistant coach under #7 Ron Mason. And all three won National Championships. Gwoz is the only one to win as a player, assistant coach, and head coach

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

My top 5:

1.) Heylinger (Michigan). His titles came in the 1950's, but 6 titles is still 6 titles
2.) York (Clarkson, BGSU, BC). 5 total titles (3 in the last 5 years) puts him second just behind Heylinger. Winning 4 in 11 years in the era of NHL defections and Major Juniors is remarkable. He will become the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history sometime next winter.
3.) Armstrong (Denver). 5 titles, albeit a long time ago.
4.) Parker (BU). His shine is starting to fade, but he still has 4 rings as a coach. I wanted to put Herb Brooks here, but I think Parker edges him out
5.) Brooks (Minnesota). I think he would have been the clear # 1 all-time if he stayed at UMTC.

Brooks is #14. Add Berenson to your Top 4. York is probably #1
BTW Armstrong's titles came after Heylinger

I believe he was just giving his top 5, not necessarily how he thinks my formula will come out. Also, Heyliger (no 'n') won his first title in '48, and then 5 titles in 6 years from '51-'56.

That list was my personal top 5, not what the North Dakota fan's list will look like. I would not put Berenson in my top 5.

Re: The Greatest Coaches of All-Time

And to finish the countdown...

1. Jerry York - 342.7881 (293.7310)
2. Vic Heyliger - 288.3783
3. Jack Parker - 284.0480 (284.0473)
4. Murray Armstrong - 272.3241
5. Red Berenson - 214.6467 (213.5278)

With his 5th title, York cements his place at the top. Hard to argue against York being #1. Only Heyliger has more titles, and York has won more than 550 games than Heyliger. York's 37 NCAA Tournament wins are more than any other coach, and his 14 Frozen Four victories are third behind Heyliger (16) and Armstrong (15). York has also coached more All-Americans (52) and Hobey Baker Finalists (18) than any other coach. Who knows when York will retire, but he will almost assuredly retire as the #1 coach. He is putting up numbers that will be very difficult for any current coach to match.

As promised, Here are the top 10 coaches on a points/season basis:
1. Herb Brooks - 19.6898 points/season
2. Barry Thorndycraft - 14.8204 points/season
3. Murray Armstrong - 12.9678 points/season
4. Vic Heyliger - 12.5382 points/season
5. Jeff Jackson - 12.0933 points/season
6. Gino Gasparini - 11.1881 points/season
7. Jack Kelley - 10.5316 points/season
8. Dean Blais - 10.3925 points/season
9. Tom Bedecki - 10.2472 points/season
10. Shawn Walsh - 9.7727 points/season

Awesome job FS23! Thank you for putting this together, and for the extra work on the pts/season rankings :)
