The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

Milewski did an interview with Todd Knott but it’s behind a paywall. Anyone get a chance to read it and are there any interesting nuggets?

it looks like MSU’s leading scorer - David Silye (Jr) - is also in the portal.

24 year old juniors worked for Quinnipiac beating Big 10 opponents on the biggest stage last weekend.

Nothing really too surprising. He did say he is getting calls about players wanting to come to Wisconsin. Also said he loved working with Hastings and wanted it to continue.

Simon Tassy to UW from.......Mankato! Played in 15 games last year as a Fr, had 1G 4A. Scored 78 pts for Salmon Arm in 53 games the year before last. Holloway had 88 in 53 his last year in the BCHL. For more perspective, Fink has 97 in 54 and is still playing.

At some point, the question becomes who is leaving from last years roster or which guys that were supposed to be incoming frosh won't be? You expect turnover/turmoil with a coaching change and Hastings has the track record to be trusted with who he wants to take roster spots relative to what the Granato crew had been accumulating. Hopefully we end up with the right blend of Granato guys that are good with Hastings guys and we end up with a better product on the ice then we have seen the last 7 years (and more like the last 2 decades if we are being honest with ourselves).

Holloway and Fink did not play in the BCHL

In addition to playing in the AJHL, Holloway was 16/17 years old and Fink 17/18. Tassy was 20. Which isn't to say Tassy's not talented, he is, but it's a different thing to dominate as the oldest player vs being among the youngest.

Good point on the ages. Being older does seem to pay dividends for Hastings.

The thing I am most excited about was written by TM in a Badgers Extra article, in which Hastings said he wanted to build a team, not a team of prospects. I think that really sums up the fault in the TG era. Lots of prospects, limited team.

Hastings knows you need some of those high end prospects but you need a team culture too to bring along and lead those prospects.

Im very impressed already in the humbleness, accountability, and quiet confidence Hastings brings to the table.

Bingo. This is what I was getting at a few pages back when I said I liked his comments about the team being a family. Culture is everything.

It’s funny, on another hockey forum I have Wild fans that go to town on Bull Guerin acquiring “culture” guys instead of more “skill” guys. You need both. Ryan Reaves was acquired for a reason, and it’s not due to elite hockey capabilities. He’s a great personality, admittedly more responsible with the puck than I thought he would be, not as penalty prone as I thought he would be, and he’s there to protect the skill guys. You need upbeat culture guys. Equal and opposite, Marcus Johansson was acquired to be a skill guy opposite of Boldy and they have been on fire since that trade. Johansson 18 points in 20 games. Boldy 23 points in 20 games.

I think Wisconsin has a decent amount of skill guys. We need that strong culture element added.

I agree with both of you. The culture / team concept is what was missing from the past era, IMO. And a defensive mentality / philosophy.

Question for you gents. I swear Quinnipiac was running a neutral zone trap. It seemed to really frustrate both Michigan and Minnesota. Does Hastings run anything similar? To beat it you really have to have quick and aggressive defensive zone exits.

At the end of the day I just want wins. But I really really dont like that style of hockey either. It just bogs down the game.

Every good team runs a neutral zone trap of some sort.

So…I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. People in Minnesota complained about Eaves running a trap, and it’s been a litany of grievances against it from many quarters but in the spirit of Badger Bob and probably dozens of Russian coaches, why can’t someone think of an offensive system to defeat the trap? I mean, we see traps in basketball right? How do you break it? Speed. Speed in passing, quick thinking, pass to daylight.

it’s not like the trap is some magic 25-foot wide defenseman that stands in front of the net. It’s a simple system of almost prevent defense. It can be overcome. I’m shocked we haven’t seen a Bill Walsh, Mike Leach or Badger Bob type coach come up with a way to break the trap like it’s a dinosaur system.

thoughts?

Well I think at least in college, so many offensive systems rely on passes up along the boards in the neutral zone that the trap becomes difficult to beat.

Many NHL defenses cant do it like the Devils did in the 90s bc zone exits are so mich quicker and the skill in passing is so much higher. It caight the NHL off guard initially but it is easily beat at that level now.

Those quick crisp are what is needed to beat it. Cant lollygag to set up the exit.
