The GAME 2011-Counting for the very last time

Re: The GAME 2011-Counting for the very last time

I was not happy with the events that led up to the Norwich 3rd goal, but to add insult to injury a student behind the Middlebury section dusted us with the contents of a box of baking soda! Pretty low class behavior if you ask me.

Jimmy,

Sorry that happened. As prof said, that's not the normal behavior of the NU students. Last night was a special night and the student's excitement probably boiled over a little bit. Hope that one incident didn't ruin the night because we all witnessed a phenomenal hockey game last night.

The students' passion was outstanding. We estimated there were probably 600 students or so in Kreitzberg around 6 p.m.

It did look like boarding to me too, but I didn't see an arm go up. It always bothers me when it takes a minute for them to make a call. What bothered me most was the non call on the off sides that occurred only seconds before the goal!

I saw several calls that were not made on both sides, but all in all I thought the calls were about even at the end. Over the many years I have attended games at Middlebury I have had worse than baking soda thrown on me. Sorry it happened, but you won't have to worry about it happening again as the series is over.

Re: The GAME 2011-Counting for the very last time

Really alot of fun watching the game tonight.Kyle was on top of his game tonight, with the hat trick. He also set up three good plays for other teammates but they could not finish it off.It was nice for me to give my hat to the ice gods, then go buy a new one with 2000,2003 and 2010 on it.:cool:. The white out was great with all the students there and the true fans coming in white. But there as I look around with all the white abound I see Hawk wearing a BLUE JACKET with a BLUE HAT on. So Hawk is a plant after all reporting back to WILLIE C. Hawk WHY O WHY did you not throw your Blue hat onto the ice like a true Norwich fan:D:D:D. does that Blue jacket reverse inside out to Green for next weekend.:rolleyes:
I been telling you right along that the guy is a spy. But wearing blue is just unacceptable.

I think there were a couple of offsides that cost us scoring opportunities as well. One in particular we had a guy with the puck three strides inside the line with the puck get whistled down for a guy who was behind him...it did cut both ways.

I hate that this is going away...

I think they should have a home-and-home series every year starting next year. Friday at Norwich and then Saturday at Middlebury. Then switch the next year. 7:00pm starts for both games. Then we'll get double the fun.

I thought the refs missed/let go a lot of things last night. Including Middlebury's 4th goal. From my angle, it looked like the puck was loose in the crease and then kicked in. I was a little disappointed that the goal stood. But there's a reason the refs ref and I sit in the stands. I know it's much easier to call a game from the stands than it is from the ice. Things happen quickly. All in all, it was a great game with ups and downs for both teams. That Overtime period was just amazing hockey to watch. I was afraid that after Norwich owned it that Midd would go down and score on their first shot. I was so glad that didn't happen.

And to top it all off, Castleton tied Southern Maine so both teams are still tied atop the standings.

Re: The GAME 2011-Counting for the very last time

FACTS: Great game...great setting...spectacular crowd. Seemed like old times with a packed house creating a lot of noise. Both teams played outstanding hockey. We saw heart-stopping shots at both ends in OT and plenty of excitement before the extra session. Classic Midd-Norwich stuff. It doesn't matter whether it's for 2 conference points or not...this game rises above it. Unless a special meeting has been held between the 2 schools to discontinue competition, and Prof was there, I see no reason for whining about "losing" anything.

OTHER FACTS: D-III officiating leaves alot to be desired. Live with it. It will not improve.

MORE FACTS: The NU staff, Charlie in particular, has done an outstanding job bringing students back into the K-berg. It wasn't long ago that the only students you saw there were the cadets serving as ushers in gold windbreakers. The student section, the whiteout etc. created a fantastic atmosphere. When student are part of an high-stakes, emotional game stupid things happen....there hasn't been a rink I've visited where something stupid hasn't been done by a few students, Kenyon included.

FINAL FACT: Would be nice to have a board where we discussed thing like the amazing end-to-end rushes that Kyle Thomas engineered, or the 2 goals by a Midd freshman within 38 sec., or the amazing stops made by both netminders, or the comparison between 2 teams, built totally differently from the ground up and playing vastly different styles of hockey battling to a breathtaking deadlock......but that would be talking about hockey.

Thanks to NU staff for an excellent hosting job, sorry our schedule didn't allow for coming early and sharing some pizza with the Prez and the Pres (did he find his hat?). See you soon???

Thanks Willie, now take down Castleton :):):)

I've always said that refs and drivers are a lot alike. There are bad ones everywhere. I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining about the refs because bad calls against any team even out over the course of the season. Again, there's a reason they're on the ice and I'm not. Overall I thought they did a fine job.

I thought Kyle Thomas really started gaining confidence early in the first period when he walked through the Midd defense a few times like they weren't even there. He wasn't able to finish but every time he touched the puck you could see him gaining more and more confidence. All three of his goals were things of beauty, and they were all of different styles. First one was a great rush around the defense, the second one was a beautiful shot that hit both posts, and the third was was the prettiest with him being camped in front and the defense all over him but he was still able to muscle the pass into the net. I thought he had a few good chances for a fourth goal, too. Too bad he wasn't able to get it.

And I was also really impressed with the line of 18 and 34 for Middlebury. They really created a lot of chances. I also think that's the first time that I remember that Norwich was outshot at home. Lots of credit to Middlebury for limiting Norwich's shots and for creating their own. Like you said, both goalies were up to the task. A game like that is really fun to watch. It was definitely not boring. Having ups and downs for both teams like it was really made it a lot of fun. No fan should have gone home unfulfilled.

I don't think the series will end. Why would it? Isn't it scheduled for a Tuesday night next year? As for taking down Castleton, I suspect the current concern is taking down St Mikes. After that, Midd has a stretch of 5 home games if my memory is correct, which would normally be a good thing, but they have actually played better on the road. Maybe by Feb 19th the Panthers will have learned to play better at home?

Re: The GAME 2011-Counting for the very last time

Great game! Great excitement! Loved the whiteout theme and I'm always glad to have the house full of NU students. It was also nice to meet our new governor for the first time. Unlike his predecessor (a Middlebury guy), Gov. Shumlin actually had conversations with folks, including my friend and I who were really happy to meet him. He didn't just give a quick wave to the assembled rabble and then bolt out the door like the stiff from Middlebury.

I was sorry to read here about the baking soda incident but I can tell you that I was very nervous at a game at Kenyon a few years ago when my goddaughter and I were surrounded by Midd students who were, shall we say "over-boisterous" and unhappy that they had to share their section with Norwich fans - in their beautiful facility with no reserved seats. Still, no excuse for the dusting incident. I hope it was reported.

Re: The GAME 2011-Counting for the very last time

Yipes! The Times-Argus says that the Williams game is at 3:00 today but the NU schedule says 4:00. It's 4:00, right?

I believe Charlie was reffering to the end of the Interlock.

As far as I know, Middlebury is still supposed to be on the schedule next year in a NC game.

Had my headphones on today when George interviewed Charlie about it. He's concerned that the Midd game may not be an annual game - ends up on a weeknight, and isn't at a time when the students are around. All of who have been around for a while remember how the end of Midd/NU Football went - at least we still have the Wadsworth cup. There's a fear that the same kind of thing might happen again.
