As one who mocks the standard of play in MLS... I totally agree. :)

That was like watching a Greek scrimmage.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Well, given the low scoring nature of soccer, scoring 0 doesn't allow for much comparison to other sports, but the best I can come up with from the calculations was this was an NBA game that was 93-93 after double OT and they just decided to end in a three point contest. In other words, a very boring one. Just like this was.

Hopefully Germany is willing to open it up in the Final.

So y'all would have preferred to continue watching that 0-0 play for another 2 or 3 hrs :p

Clearly they need to make the goals bigger, the goalie equipment smaller and add room behind the net to increase the scoring in regulation.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

didn't see much of extra time but that was easily one of the worst games in the tournament

I think there have been some solutions earlier in the thread or in the other soccer thread. I like the idea of taking off players every five minutes until you 7-on-7. That's just my opinion.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

They need to take 3-4 players per team off the field. Give the good players some room to make stuff happen.

It would still take less time (and feature more actual play) than a typical baseball game.:p

I'm not as opposed to the PKs as some folks are, but I'm also not convinced that we'd see endless tied games, especially if you allowed additional substitutions and/or allowed a substituted player to re-enter in overtime. Teams know they can't play for the tie and would be willing to take more chances. And if the game dragged on, eventually the more creative coach will find a way to match up a fresh player against a fatigued player.

We just see that teams can play the futbol equivalent of the trap, or dean smith's four corners...oh well.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It would probably help if the OT was Sudden Death.... I've always wondered why they never went to that...

They used to have it, and extra time really stunk - both immediately went to defense-first, since making a mistake was absolutely (and not just probably) fatal. They changed *to* playing the full OT in order to get teams to take more risks going forward. Obviously, there still needs to be more incentive, somehow, but darned if I have any solutions. Maybe if it's still tied at the end of OT, give the win to the team that had more possession in the attacking 3rd, or the team that won more corners during OT.

What Lynah Fan refers to was called "Golden Goal", which was the soccer term for "Sudden Death".

MLS or one of its precursors gave the penalty kicker possession at midfield, and when he touched the ball, the goalie was allowed to come off his line. I think it was time limited.

It felt to me more like watching a live chess match, with human beings as the pieces. If you understood the tactical intricacies of the game, it might have been fascinating....but only for a very "discerning" taste. The former pros on ESPN were talking along these lines.
