The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Yeah it is. No way Brazil throws a game at home.

I really hope so. I just wish there was absolutely zero doubt, and given the state of the sport I don't think there is ever zero doubt.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

On the Deadspin article I posted earlier, I saw someone make the comments "Semi-final Solution." I'm still shaking my head over that one.

Oh God. I both do and do not want to meet whoever wrote that. Yikes.

However, as was pointed out there was indeed one clever joke:

Probably already some Germans denying this many goals were scored. "The number of 5 is exaggerated."

Tell me about it. That's why I try to use a little more humor from earlier wars like WWI, Franco-Prussian, etc. It shows I've got a little more of a grip on history. I've also got plenty of Jewish friends as well. Deadspin did a great article on how Germans are hesitant to get behind a national cause because of the wars they started.

Here it is.

I had a very interesting conversation with a random German woman in the Munich airport in 1999 or so. She kept talking about how much she loved Bavaria, Bavaria this, Bavaria that. I commented that it was interesting to me that she had so much pride in her region/state. She replied that it was still, 50 years later, much more acceptable to have Bavarian pride than German pride.

Good article, though the author spoke too soon.

There's a problem though: heroes are often impervious to criticism. It's one of their powers. Rather than look into what went wrong, the immediate aftermath of the USA-Belgium game featured a lot of praise of the US players, who never gave up and fought hard. (Did other countries give up? I can't think of any.)

And the one that did give up was against Germany! How fitting!

I had a few tirades in the Deadspin comments about how a lot of the Nazi jokes are really tiresome and stupid... but I've got to hand it to the guy that wrote it: the Semi-final Solution joke was pretty funny.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

My post from after the opening match of the tournament (cutting out passages solely about Croatia and/or Mexico and/or the humor of "Bernard" as a Brazilian soccer name):

Thoughts from the game:

For a team described as "un-Brazil-like" due to being so solid defensively, Brazil sure did seem to have only a passing interest in defending. Thiago Silva is a world-class stay at home center back but if Dani Alves and Marcelo are going to defend only when absolutely necessary, then I think the center midfielders need to do more to support the defense, and if Oscar is the one of those three doing the most defending (he made 4 tackles, neither Luiz Gustavo nor Paulinho made any) then something is wrong. Maybe Fernandinho or Hernanes starts the next match?

If Hulk continues to be as invisible as he was during that match then he's going to have his change his nickname to another superhero. It was entirely justifiable for him to be the first one subbed off.

The penalty was soft. There was a tug on the shoulder but Fred sure did seem to go down easily.

...

David Luiz kinda runs all over the place; he's got the speed to recover a lot of the time, but I think that could cost Brazil against better teams.

Speaking of things that could cost Brazil against better teams, Julio Cesar looks shaky. All three of his backups (the two on the squad and the standby) are over 30 and inexperienced at international level; do they have anybody good in the pipeline?
Only a passing interest in defending? Check. Not enough support from midfielders? Check. Thiago Silva needing help (and, as a corollary, Brazil being in trouble without him)? Check. Hulk being invisible? Check. David Luiz getting forward costing Brazil against better teams? Check. Julio Cesar not being good enough? Check.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

You know what I was thinking? If you took all the retired players on ESPN's studio and match commentary teams, and put uniforms on them and put them on the field, I think they would give Germany a better game than Brazil yesterday.

Moreno - Van Nistelrooy - Twellman
Solari - Martinez - McManaman
Gilberto Silva - Lalas - Ballack - Robson
Keller

Many of these guys are old and/or out of position, but a good number of them are under 45, and some of the best former players (RvN, Gilberto Silva, Ballack) are under 40. And if you expand it to the 2010 and 2006 coverage, you get some more players to fill out your bench (Celo, Harkes, Wynalda, Robin Fraser, Ruud Gullit, Shep Messing to be your backup goalkeeper).

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

538 has an article on the most comparable sports blowouts.

Some are just on score, others are on title implications.
NFL: 62-7 Jaguars win over the Dolphins in Marino's final game. The 73-0 NFL Championship between Bears and Redskins would have actually been more like a 11-1 win for Germany.
NCAAF: 63-7 Tulsa over BGSU bowl game. For more meaningful, #1 Nebraska over #2 Florida 62-24 in 1996 Fiesta Bowl.
NBA: A trio of Lakers playoff wins by 40+ scattered through 2 decades
NCAAB: Magic Johnson's Michigan State squad over Penn 101-67 in the '79 Final Four

Unfortunately the study that the standard deviation for points is from didn't do it for hockey, but I'd have guess the game 7, 7-0 thrashing of the Avs by the Wings would be comparable.

The thing is, the only road game on that whole list is one of the Lakers wins back in the 70s. So even these doesn't compare to yesterday.

ESPN compared what scoring 7 WC goals would be in American sports: 14 NHL goals, 22 MLB runs, 104 NFL points or 484 NBA points.

So Belichick has a new goal going into the season...

Something seems off about the basketball one. 484 points is impossible. You would need to hit 3.36 three pointers every minute to be able to do that. The 102 in the NFL is nearly impossible due to the timing rules. In the college game it's certainly feasible and probably would've happend in the last couple years if teams didn't have sportsmanship.

I just think the high scoring and timing nature of basketball doesn't work when comparing it to soccer for points.

The 73-0 NFL Championship between Bears and Redskins

My Dad was at that game. As a Redskins fan. Age 13.

There is no way I'm ever going to experience that level of sports pain. The Mets are pikers compared to that.

I think that the Bears - Redskins game was on the road.....
