The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

ESPN compared what scoring 7 WC goals would be in American sports: 14 NHL goals, 22 MLB runs, 104 NFL points or 484 NBA points.

That doesn't make any sense. I doubt a single person at ESPN has even heard of the student t distribution.

The sad/maybe good thing about the Ger-Brz score is it would have been 8-0 except for a deliberate miss at 90+.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

My Dad was at that game. As a Redskins fan. Age 13.

There is no way I'm ever going to experience that level of sports pain. The Mets are pikers compared to that.

You should become a Vikings fan. About once every 8-10 years they get your hopes up enough to trick you into letting your guard down before they come in and go all Temple of Doom on your heart.

Edit: One of my favorite Bill Simmons articles from back in the day:

I'm still getting over the shock that there was once a time when Bill Simmons wasn't garbage. What's next -- a non-smarmy episode of PTI?!

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The North Stars getting pasted 8-0 by the Penguins in Game 6 in '91.:(

It needed to be a game 7 to make it comparable. And it needed to be between say the Canadians and the Red Wings.

It's not just the margin, but the criticality, and the history of the two teams. (And of course the home team has to eat it.)

The Bears-Skins game may be the only comparable US event. And even then... in 1940 the NFL just wasn't that big a deal. Attendance was only 34k, and Mutual Network coverage did not cover more than about a quarter of the country.

I hate to say this, since it feeds the self-absorption of both sets of loathsome fans, but maybe the 2004 ALCS?

I think that the Bears - Redskins game was on the road.....

Ah, you are correct. For some reason I've always thought it was in Chicago.

Still, with the popularity of the NFL at the time the magnitude doesn't not even register on the radar compared to yesterday.

10 minutes until Der Dutch take on the Fightin' Maradonas.

Yes, MNS-PIT '91 doesn't compare to GER-BRA '14 in overall scope, I only listed it it as a lopsided loss in a defining game.

Ah. Got it.

Duke losing by 30 to UNLV in the 1990 final comes to mind, too, but it was in Denver. Put that game in Charlotte and maybe it's similar.

Please tell me that Argentinian bench player didn't have an ICP tat on his thigh.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Geez, almost 40 minutes in and it isn't 5-0 yet. Let's go!

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

this game sucks. just constant fouls, flopping and whining

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Ok the more I thought about that 484 from the NBA the more I'm pretty sure someone screwed up and just took the number of standard deviations away that Germany's 7 was and multiplied it by the NBA average rather than applying the same number of standard deviations to the NBA average.

Just doing a rough calculation, 7/1.89= 3.7 standard deviations. The 538 article says the standard deviation for the NBA is 12. 12x3.7=44.44. Taking the 15th ranked team in the NBA's point average for this year and adding it that equals 145 points scored, which makes much more sense. Very rudimentary and perhaps wrong, but much more logical. This also puts the NFL one at 75 points. Using the strategy that I think ESPN did, they did 3.7 the average, plus the standard deviation, which gets 103.66.

Maybe I'm the one that's mistaken but it seems to make much more sense. 7 goals has happened before in soccer, many times. 102 has never happened in the NFL and 484 has certainly never happened in the NBA. However, 75 (ok 73) has happened once before in the NFL, and in the 80's NBA teams would reach the 140s not routinely, but a decent amount.

That seems right. I was thinking they were even dumber, and just took the ratio of average margins of victory.

Dreadful 90, hopefully to be followed by a great 30.

Yeah that was definitely one of the more boring regulations of the tournament. Was there even one noteworthy save? The only exciting thing was Robben almost scoring at 90+1.
