The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm trying to come up with a comparison for America.

All I'm getting is that in some alternate universe there's a hybrid of the Great Depression and Great Recession and the government forgets the TVA and auto bailouts and instead decides to put all money into building basketball arenas to host the Summer Olympics, but puts them in South Dakota, desert in New Mexico and the Louisiana Bayou. Then the Dream Team ends up getting blown out like 96-42 to Lithuania.

It would work better if other countries actually played American football so we could get some comparison to emotional investment that Brazil has for soccer.

You're comparing the Germans to Lithuania?

You're comparing the Germans to Lithuania?

Lithuania is ranked 4th in basketball right now. I guess Spain would be the better choice since there's more parity at the top in soccer, whereas there's really just the two in basketball.

Edit: nevermind I'm stupid. For some reason I thought Germany was ranked 5th in FIFA. Turns out they're 2nd.

It's getting ugly at the Fan Zone at Copacabana. German fans are getting attacked, some are dropping their German jerseys to the ground in order to get out. There are 20,000 people in the Fan Zone, fights everywhere. Riot police have surrounded the place. Not looking pretty.

Announcement in stadium telling German fans to stay in stadium until they can be escorted out. Yikes.

Where are you guys getting this info?

I'm getting this from a fan who sent tweets from the Fan Fest. He reports things have calmed down, and the pictures on ESPN concur. But I expect ESPN to gloss over any violence anyway.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

A British tabloid points out: Germany scored more goals tonight than England have in the past two World Cups combined.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Did ESPN compare this game to LeBron in the Finals?
Really?

And I expect CNN and other news outlets to sensationalize it, as they did with last year's protests.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Love Scolari. He just brushed off a German reporter's question about culpability for the loss, taking 100% blame. Said all the choices come back to him.

I realize that's what he's expected to do, but the way he did it was top-notch, high class. Thumbs up for him.

Yep. ESPN's cameras have shown calm, but I doubt they are sending their cameras off the beaten path.

Imagine if ESPN were covering the 1972 Olympics at Munich. "There is a report of some disturbance in the Israeli section of the Olympic Village...and now back to swimming..."

I did my hands on this exclusive audio that played during that goal-barrage.

I haven't seen a bloodbath this bad since the Red Wedding.

I think it should be called the yellow wedding, I wonder if Brazil will change its jerseys again like they did after the maracanazo.

Brazil has now surpassed the USA as the largest loser in a World Cup semifinal. USA lost in 1930 by a score of 6-1.
