The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

That really is sad. I thought they were on the right path when they hosted one of the U World Cups, but that didn't last. The other sports besides hockey like tennis and basketball are picking up big time. I wonder why Canada struggles at soccer so much. They've got a ton of immigrants from the Caribbean that come to their country. You'd think they'd be able to find some decent players out of that group.
The first problem is that when Canada does have a talented player, they usually end up playing for another country.

But the main problem, the Canadian Soccer Association is terribly run. They don't have any national planning regarding player development or coaching standards. And they don't have anywhere near the level of corporate support the US or Mexico does.

The real sad part is they have really good programs for player development. The Vancouver Whitecaps have had probably one of the best in North America for years and Toronto FC has a good one as well. They just have nothing at the National level to bring it together.

The 2013 Gold Cup was a sign of Canada's ineptness. That tournament was their only set of competitive matches until the 2015 Gold Cup and the brought a C-level squad. They were doing good until getting blown out by Honduras in their final WCQ, finishing a point short of the Hex, and then they got smoked in the Gold Cup. It's just sad.

Thats what I've heard for years...they have the talent, just no direction from the top.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The overnight for the USA-GER match is 6.3 on ESPN. Numbers will be released later today.

The USA-Belgium game is Tuesday at 4PM EST which should provide good ratings. If it all works out, the next game would be vs Argentina on Saturday, July 5. TV numbers for that would be off the charts.

How does a 6.3 on an 11 AM CDT weekday compare?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Interesting QF matchup now that Russia-Germany went in the tank would be France-Algeria.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So here is a question for everyone, if the US was so gassed against Germany, like we all noticed, why didn't Klinsmann use his third sub?

Young and the Restless is the highest-rated daytime show (not in syndication) and averaged 4.4M viewers on CBS June 9-13.

Judge Judy did a 7.1 rating with 9.9M viewers that same week. Live w/ Kelly and Michael did a 2.7 (3.6M viewers), Ellen did a 2.1 (2.9M).

I'd like to see the ESPN3/Univision online numbers before I judge this...there were plenty of people watching online at work because they couldn't take a long lunch like I did.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I was wondering that myself.
I would have thought a guy like Diskerud or one of the forwards for someone would have been good...I mean before the Ronaldo goal, a goal for was more important than allowing one...losing 2-1 was way better for them than 1-0 based on things...just seems odd that he didn't use his third sub.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The scariest part is that even if she doesn't actually believe the **** that comes out of her mouth (er... keyboard), she has fans and straight-ticket knuckledragger types that absolutely do believe it.
Yeah, I'm a republican and I just laugh at her because just about everything she does is an act to push someone's buttons and rial up people.

It's pretty funny, though, if you hear it in your head like Lewis Black was reading it in his humorous, curmudgeonly way (as a parody). Taking it seriously will just kill your remaining brain cells.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

A few excerpts from Ken Schott's article:

-- The telecast averaged a 6.7 rating and 10,771,000 viewers, making it the second highest-rated, and third most-viewed, men’s World Cup match on ESPN or ESPN2 ever. ESPN's highest-rated World Cup match -– a 9.6 rating for the 2014 USA vs. Portugal contest last Sunday -- is also the most-viewed soccer match across all U.S television networks, averaging 18,220,000 viewers. ESPN's second most-viewed men's World Cup match -– USA vs. Ghana on June 16 -– averaged 11,093,000 viewers and a 6.3 rating.

-- The match also garnered multiple audience records for WatchESPN, adding an additional 1,050,000 viewers in the average minute audience to ESPN's telecast. Overall, the WatchESPN coverage had 3,200,000 unique viewers and 143,000,000 live minutes viewed. This accounted for a 10 percent lift to ESPN's English-language TV audience.

-- The telecast also ranks as ESPN's most-viewed weekday, non-holiday, afternoon program on record.

-- At its highest point, ESPN's telecast averaged 12,055,000 viewers and a 7.7 rating from 1:30 to 2 p.m. WatchESPN’s peak of 1,700,000 concurrent users set a record for the platform.

-- In addition to television and digital, the USA vs. Germany match generated an estimated audio streaming average minute audience of 239,300.

-- ESPN.com and ESPNFC.com, led by Thursday's World Cup matches, set platform records for unique visitors in one day, hitting 19,500,000 and 7,800,000, respectively.

In the 48 games of group play, ESPN generated its largest viewership for ever, averaging 3,540,000 viewers and 2.2 US HH rating for ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC telecasts combined. The averages also marks significant increases over ESPN's opening round telecasts in 2010 and 2006: 46 percent and 109 percent (vs. 2,429,000 viewers in 2010 and 1,691,000 in 2006), and 38 percent and 83 percent (vs. 1.6 rating in 2010 and 1.2 in 2006), respectively.

Meanwhile Variety reports:

ESPN said Thursday’s 2014 FIFA World Cup match between the U.S. and Germany yielded its highest-ever online viewership — with 3.2 million live unique viewers — even though the heavy demand blocked many from accessing the sports cabler’s live stream.

ESPN’s reported figure surpasses NBC Sports’ 2.1 million unique users for the USA-Canada men’s hockey semifinal during the 2014 Winter Olympics earlier this year, which would make the USA-Germany World Cup match the most-streamed sports event in the U.S. to date. WatchESPN requires users to log in to verify their pay-TV subscription, as did the NBC Olympics digital service.

Univision Communications, which holds the Spanish-language World Cup broadcast rights in the U.S., reported a record 1.7 million unique viewers for its Internet stream of the USA-Germany content, with a peak of 750,000 concurrent live viewers, on its unauthenticated service.

And Multichannel.com says
For its part, Univision/Univision Deportes Network’s simulcast of the U.S.- Germany match delivered 3.4 million total viewers, including 1.7 million persons 18 to 49. Together, U.S.-Germany averaged some 14.2 million English- and Spanish-language viewers yesterday. - See more at: http://www.multichannel.com/news/co...e-142m-us-germany/375441#sthash.yASTg9NM.dpuf
