Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Through the Group Stage:

CONMEBOL: 13-2-3 41/54 (.759)
UEFA: 13-7-9 46/87 (.529) (5 UEFA v UEFA games)
CONCACAF: 5-3-4 18/36 (.500)
CAF: 3-3-9 12/45 (.267)
AFC: 0-3-9 3/36 (.083)

CONCACAF lost the last two games (HON, USA) to drop to .500
UEFA went undefeated (5-1-0) in the last six games to move past CONCACAF into second place.
AFC went 0-fer at the World Cup.
CONCACAF advanced 3 teams past the Group Stage for the first time ever.
The United States advanced past the Group Stage at consecutive World Cups for the first time ever.
This is the first time ever that neither Italy nor England have advanced to the Round of 16. In 1974, when only 16 teams made the field, England did not qualify and Italy was eliminated in the group stage.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So the round of 16 is set.
AFC 0/4
CAF 2/5
CONCACAF 3/4
CONMEBOL 5/6
UEFA 6/13

Pretty pathetic showing for UEFA through the Group Stage...too bad 4 of the 5 CONMEBOL teams are stacked into the same quarter of the bracket or I don't see much hope UEFA.
Asia is the real disappointment here. To not only get no teams advancing but to not even win a game is pretty * bad. Australia had a tough group and played well despite it, Iran as well, but Japan and South Korea were huge disappointments. And thing is, there really isn't much more they can do. The K-League and the J-League are very good leagues and they have good development systems and good coaches but they still laid an egg in Brazil.

CONCACAF though. People can stop talking crap about CONCACAF. Mexico gets out of a tough group with Brazil and some good teams, Costa Rica gets out of a group they had no business getting out of, beating out Three World Champions in Italy, England, and Uruguay. The US gets out of the Group of Death with Germany, Portugal, and Ghana. Honduras was a bit of a disappointment, but I don't think they did that bad either.

A France-Germany QF? Get your best WWII jokes ready. :D

I will be there, resplendent in the Stars and Stripes. Should be a blast, assuming the round of 16 goes as it "should". A bit more scintillating than last night's France-Ecuador match. Were it not for Dominguez, the match was a snoozer....

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

People on the Ukraine better be on alert. Vlad Putin gets cranky whenever he loses an event. (See Sochi Olympic hockey for previous evidence.)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Wow. That US game was an abortion. Cure for insomnia though.

Bradley has feet of stone this tourney.

Nah, I'm thinking he goes after Belarus for this one...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Interesting to think that if you had said 6 months ago that the U.S. would get out of the Group of Death without Altidore and Donovan, people would likely have thought you were crazy.
Don't know if we can beat Belgium, but this is a pretty good accomplishment for this team

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The United States advanced past the Group Stage at consecutive World Cups for the first time ever.

Although, the second time that the United States have advanced to the knockout stages in consecutive World Cups ('30, '34). Granted, there were no other stages at the '34 Cup, but the US played in the knockout stages nonetheless.

I have not been terribly impressed with Belgium (or anyone in Group H for that matter). If the United States can play a complete game, I like our chances. With the possible exception of Costa Rica, Belgium is (by far) the weakest group winner.

Assuming the knockout stages go as they should (big assumption), we will have Brazil v. France/Germany on one side, and Argentina v. Netherlands on the other. That being said, given the way this Cup has gone thus far, it will probably be Greece and the Americans squaring off to face the winner of Chile and Algeria. I'll be okay either way :p:D:D

Costa Rica didn't just get out of a group they had no business getting out of, they dominated a group that contained three world powers.

It's pretty shocking. Costa Rica is having a fantastic tournament.

Speaking of CONCACAF, you know who's really missing out? Canada. It's a real sign that the organization running soccer in your country is inept when your neighbors are in the last 16 and you're ranked 110th with Bahrain.

Sad fact: Costa Rica will have to go through qualifying for the 2015 Gold Cup while Canada will get an automatic berth.

That really is sad. I thought they were on the right path when they hosted one of the U World Cups, but that didn't last. The other sports besides hockey like tennis and basketball are picking up big time. I wonder why Canada struggles at soccer so much. They've got a ton of immigrants from the Caribbean that come to their country. You'd think they'd be able to find some decent players out of that group.

I found out last night during World Cup Tonight that this is the first time ever that 2 Africa nations have made it to the round of 16 in the same World Cup....as for the whole USA has mad 3 of 4 rounds of 16, I'm pumped bit at the same time, this is the first time since their run started in 1990 that back to back world jumps were held outside Europe. Other than more success in the knockout round, that has to be the next goal...get out of a group when the cup is in Europe (Russia).

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The overnight for the USA-GER match is 6.3 on ESPN. Numbers will be released later today.

The USA-Belgium game is Tuesday at 4PM EST which should provide good ratings. If it all works out, the next game would be vs Argentina on Saturday, July 5. TV numbers for that would be off the charts.

Shoot, I had been reading the quarters would be on July 4. It was mentioned so much I thought it was the more likely option. Didn't realize that we would need to win the group for that to happen.

Ugh. In going to be out of town with limited coverage and not a lot of soccer fans willing to go into town to watch it with me. Which is a problem since we are carpooling in someone else's car.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Chiellini is saying Suarez' ban is excessive.
Interesting...
