Technically, ENG is not eliminated yet, but need Italy to rout Costa Rica and Uruguay and then defeat Costa Rica. They have a -2 GD which kills them in this group. If Italy and Costa Rica draw tomorrow England is out.

Not counting the three matches between UEFA squads so far, UEFA has taken 49% of the points so far. CONMEBOL is at 73.3% and CONCACAF remains at 67%. Africa and Asia are absolutely horrid. They have combined for 1 win in 12 games and have earned only 17% of the points. Abysmal.

Pretty standard for Africa, the Asian teams have been affected by bad draws (Australia) and the fact their power teams haven't played much (Japan now, Korea later).

lalas has a real inferiority complex when it comes to US soccer

yet at the same time i think he picked us to go out in the group stage. can't figure him out.

I'm torn... I want Costa Rica to win/draw and advance for the good of CONCACAF... But at the same time, I do feel bad for England... But the English also had their chances... So go Ticos...

I picked Italy and Uruguay to advance in my pool....still, I'd rather see Italy and Costa Rica advance anyway, i think.


switching gears, I notice that we now have a 'controversy' over concussions, after Uruguay let an obviously-concussed player re-enter the game. The guy was out cold for a few minutes!

Good stuff! I doubted Costa Rica would have what it took to stand up to Italy, but they're doing quite well and deservedly have taken the lead. But, there's a lot of time for Balotti, Pirlo, etc. to change things.

They will definitely have a tough time if they shell it up and try to defend for an entire half. Sure seemed like they deserved the penalty earlier.
