I'm so sorry that we should have some actual expectations that they will win a match.

I'm happy that we won, but it was just one match.

Putting it in a different way, if our expectations are that low, how do we ever expect to win a world cup? (and if we never expect to win one, why watch?)

And also in a different way- so many people are mentioning that it was a bad game, bad win, etc. Yet we should celebrate as if we won the lottery?

So, again, sorry to have actual expectations.

I think the time and dates were announced before the draw (yes, everyone knew Brazil would be A1) but there are some venues that only play night games because of the heat.

I don't expect them to win this world cup yet I still want to watch and see how they do against the big boys like Portugal and Germany. You have to take into consideration the road, not just the final outcome. I will say that if they are fortunate enough to get the round of 16, there is nobody that they absolutely cannot beat in group H. In short, the QFs is realistic for this team given what happened yesterday (the end results of both games, not the way they actually played).

Winning the lottery just means you were lucky. The US was a little lucky yesterday, but you need luck in a World Cup.

Name a game that mattered where the US played bad for the vast majority and still won? I think that is something to celebrate. The US is not considered a team that can win if they aren't playing near their best, and yet they beat a very dangerous Ghanian team on an off day.

Again, I think it's great that they won. I even watched the post game coverage on ESPN-news.

There's celebrating winning a game you probably should not have (but should have fully expected to win in the first place) and then there's celebrating as if this was some kind of special thing that we may never see again.

They should have won. They played badly and still won, great. It should not be celebrated as if they will never win another WC game, at least I don't think so. That sets the bar far too low.

Not sure how we get a lot of the country to pay attention when we really have no expectation other than beating the other bad team in our group.

edit- I did like seeing how the US Womens team reacted to the win. More of a 'yea, you SHOULD win those games' kind of happiness.

You're right. The celebrations we saw of Brazil, German and Argentine fans were the exception. No one in those countries gets very excited about the World Cup until at least the Quarterfinals.

So something that the US has done 4 other times in the modern era shouldn't be celebrated? I'm sorry if you think a World Cup win isn't a big deal. Did Ghana fans celebrate their gtg in the 82'? They sure did. Did English fans celebrate the gtg with Italy? They sure did. You think the Dutch fans weren't bonkers over beating Spain? This is the group of death, none of these matches are suppose to be easy, while Ghana may be the weakest on paper, they've had our number. We got that monkey off our back when many of us in the 83rd minute thought it was far more likely Ghana continue to press and find the winner as the US wilted.

OK, I think you are targeting the bandwagon soccer fans that really only care because people like to be/show that they are American. I can certainly understand this from your point of view. I don't think the real, die hard soccer fans are exaggerating the win. It was a big win in that it got them the maximum # of points. Most of us realize that that level of play, however, was not good enough.

This is where we go our different ways. Ghana is nowhere close to being a bad team. I'm not sure where you got that from. They easily could have been in the semifinals last time around. What do you propose? The country has been/is paying attention. As I said, people like showing their American pride. I don't see how telling people we are better than we actually are will change anything. The people who know the game know that expecting to beat Germany is foolish (not because it won't ever happen but because right now they are superior). The people who don't know the game will certainly tune in regardless because they don't know any better.

I think half the excitement of the celebration was not the fact of the win but the way we did it (blowing the lead late, then scoring in the waning moments despite not having a decent scoring chance in the second half). You go nuts for a walkoff even if you beat the Mets.
