Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

A few match facts:
The last time a US player scored in his World Cup debut: Clint Mathis
The last time the US won its opening game: 2002. Went to the Quarters.
The last time a US sub scored a goal in a World Cup game: Never.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I love this game but I hate this game . Can't be a US without some drama.

Watching this Men in Blazers podcast on ESPN3 is rather entertaining. Englishmen acting like they are Americans and making fun of the English. Hilarious.

Or as we call it in America, "Top Gear."

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Will Portugal come out hungry and ready to play to help them forget their World Cup opener? Or will they continue their implosion against the US?

That's the Million Dollar question that the Portuguese Media is going to be freaking out about to those guys for the next couple of days. I'm kinda wondering if we would want them sitting and stewing about getting waxed by the Germans, or would we want to move that game up a day or two?

Oi. That was much too stressful.

Wow. Just got back to hotel in natal. Need blood pressure meds. Gotta say, we US fans have a ton to learn from the euros and South Americans. So **** tentative.

Anyway, as I'm sure was evidenced on the old telly, the midfield was absolutely HORRIBLE tonight. Timmy carried us thru the midpoint, and then We scraped our way til the 88th(?) minute.

Still, freakin brilliant outcome.

Will admit to taunting a brasileiro whose sole reason for being there was to watch us lose. After cheering the selecao on in São Paulo, I got all over his arsse after the corner.

Anyhoo, let's do this. Eff CR7

let them overthink... that's all the international press know how to do... hopefully it bleeds into the players... lost generation, and all that.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm sure they don't care, but the German kits are hideous. They look like tennis players especially Müller.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The air just went of Ghana after that Brooks' goal. You'd think someone switched the feed of the game to the Red Wedding scene.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Fun win for sure. Enjoyed watching it.

Unfortunately, it's quite possible that it was the high point of the tourney for us.

Hopefully not.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Just finished watching the game (long day at work). Bradly was dreadful. Perhaps he did some useful things off the ball, but when he had it he was a turnover machine. We will not get the result we need against Portugal (tie) if we can't maintain some possession in the center to allow players time to get forward into the attack. Thankfully we didn't need that today, with both goals effectively coming off of set pieces (throw in, corner), but we need much better midfield control to be able to create chances from the run of play - especially if we have to make a go of it without Altidore.

That said - what a game to watch! Edge of my seat the entire time and I am totally drained.... U S A! U S A!

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I was saying the same thing about Bradley and got some odd/shocked/disapproving looks at the bar (we were at the MSP HQ of American Outlaws). He definitely had a terrible game.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Luckily it is very unlikely Bradley will play that poorly again.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Assuming Germany goes 3-0, is GD the first tie breaker after pts? Or is it head-to-head and then GD?

Trying to decide if I'd prefer Ghana/Portugal having a winner or them tying.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Landon Donovan's on the team, and we don't beat Ghana.
Landon Donovan is cut, and we beat Ghana.

Looks like we cut the right guy.
