Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

This Iran-Nigeria game has some good pace to it. Lots of chances early in this one. Some great saves as well.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Ghana lineup vs USA: Kwarasey; Opare, Mensah, Boye, Asamoah; A. Ayew, Rabiu, Muntari, Atsu; J. Ayew, Gyan.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

crowd booing? you'd think this would be the game iran would push for a win

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

have to admit, while i know we somehow lost to iran in '98...it boggles my mind that iran is "good" at soccer relatively speaking.
To be fair to that comment, Iran is the 2nd largest country in AFC that seriously cares about soccer. There just isn't much in the confederation beyond Japan, the Koreas, Australia and the far western AFC teams that actually care.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

that's just it though. i had no idea iran seriously cares about soccer. derek rae was saying they don't get much support from their federation. so much so that they might not be able to exchange shirts after the game.

It's because of they're cheap. It's amazing how well they do considering the lack of help they get.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

if this ends in draw i give both a 0% chance to move on

That was a classic lesson in narrative-building. Months of media hype and build-up about the political ramifications of that game and how it was the battle of ideologies and payback for the hostage crisis and whatever other garbage people could come up with. And then the US just absolutely got their asses kicked in that game and the media couldn't run away from soccer fast enough.

China and India are at least understandable in why they're terrible because they just don't care. Indonesia has always been the most baffling because they're the fourth-biggest in the world, and soccer is probably the most popular sport there. I know they're great at badminton, but I don't think it's siphoning off all their athletes, especially with how popular soccer seems to be.

Yeah, that sure was a frustrating experience. And that with some of our best ever players (Keller, Pope, Jones, Ramos, Reyna, McBride) involved.

Do I simply overestimate the offensive bona fides of Zusi, Diskerud and Johannsson or am I right in thinking that this is a good conservative approach to make sure we don't have any defensive breakdowns while keeping those guys available to provide an offensive punch if we're struggling to get a ball in the net?
