Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

My Mom with a great quote: "Maybe the Dutch will wear blue more often now..."

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Spain hasn’t gotten blitzed like this since the Umayyad Caliphate showed up in 711.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Didn't Netherlands and Spain fight a (religious) war back in the 1600's?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The worst loss a defending World Cup champion has ever suffered.

I saw on twitter that this was revenge for Spain occupying Holland back in those days, so most likely.

I love the socceroos...and I have close friends in Australia. And they're underdogs...but I want Spain out. So Chile winning is probably better for that.

But screw it. Go Aussies!

At least we get to hear Advance Australia Fair.

What's everybody's opinion on rooting for ancestry? Obviously not rooting for them OVER the USA, but outside of that.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Spain should have known something was up when the Dutch fans starting humming "The Rains of Castamere" at halftime.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I know I've got a friend who's got Ghanaian in him that's openly rooting for Ghana over us. Might give INS a call.

I'm from West Michigan, where if you're not Dutch you aren't much. However, I'm a bit of a mudblood. Have Dutch, Irish, German, English, Austrian, and Swedish in me. Obviously three of those teams are not in the WC and I hate England so the only choices for 2014 are the Dutch and Germany. I've rooted for Netherlands in the past because they like their jerseys and was pretty indifferent to Germany in the past, but became friends with a German exchange student after 2010 so we've been having some fun back and forth, but I've also found myself rooting for them more now.

Like I said, I won't be rooting for them to beat the US or anything, but I don't think it's awful to root for them once the US is gone. I end up adopting all the CONCACAF teams besides Mexico and all the African teams (except Ghana, because reasons) for underdog reasons so I end up with rooting interests for like 1/4 of the field, but I'd say the Germans and Dutch are the only ones with a real shot at the Cup out of my group of 8 or 9.

Nothing is worst than the people who root for a country over the US because they have a fraction of bloodline or studied abroad there once, though.

I'm partial to certain family lines more than others. Irish, Swedish, yes, definitely. Scottish, mmmm ok. English, German, French, meh.

I'm 1/4 Italian, and root for the Azzurri along with the US, but obviously US is first.

Here's my list, in order.

USA
Italy
Ireland
Australia/NZ
Argentina
Netherlands

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It's worse than that, they thought fans would confuse Spain's reds and Holland's blues. That makes even less sense, unless you factor in third world countries that might still have a lot of people watching on black and white TV sets. Or if you factor in the fact that FIFA never knows what they're doing.

So I still don't know what I think about ESPN having pro-Mexico announcers for their game. Seems a bit like having pro-Red Sox announcers on YES. Yeah, there's probably a ton of el tri fans watching, but it still didn't feel right.
Yeah, seriously, Mexico can eat a bag of **** as far as soccer is concerned.

I do it. Germany, Austria and Norway for me. I'm equal parts each, plus an equal part of ancestry from the pre-Bolshevic Russian empire, but my ancestors left there to avoid persecution and genocide so **** those guys. I also have a soft spot for the Dutch and Danish (if you go back far enough in my German lineage, there's a maiden name with a double 'a' in it, so I figure there's probably something from one of those two buried in there).

As you note, never to extent where I'm cheering for them ahead of the US, but you can bet that I'll be pulling for Germany outside of our clash with them at the end of the group stage (up until then, I'm assuming that their success helps us out).

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I like how ESPN (or whoever is in charge) keeps using the goal line technology to show that all the goals have in fact been goals, even though it has been completely unnecessary thus far.
I'm pretty sure its a world feed like the olympics.
