The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Ghana doesn't need to steamroll Portugal, all they have to do is win and score 2 more goals than the US.

2-1 Ghana, 1-0 Germany is enough for Ghana to win...

Yeah, I know. But I feel like Portugal has given up. The fact that they didn't celebrate at all after their last goal makes it likely they put up less than a stellar effort on Thursday. I wouldn't count on them helping our cause, meaning we need the draw.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

In the big picture Germany still needs a result even with their goal differential to leave no doubt they advance so i think game 3 will be a draw. Neither team wants to leave the door open. Even if its not direct collusion, i think the flow of the game will show a tight to the vest style of play for both.

Klinsman was probably on the phone to Joachim Löw saying, "Wie wäre es mit einem Unentschieden?" How about a draw? Not sure if I translated that correctly...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I've been very impressed with Klinsmann's coaching. I see why he is the guy we wanted to hire.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The game did a 9.7 overnight on ESPN. Better than the BCS Championship.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Group B de facto Championship starts in about 5 minutes.

Netherlands takes first with a win or draw. Chile needs the win.

In the other game the Aussies will look to score without Cahill who is suspended for two yellow cards, and the Spanish look to not finish last, not just in the group, but the entire Cup. They are currently ranked 32nd of 32 due to goal differential.

Not to put too much weight on this, but I do recall reading that the average MLS match began outdrawing the average NBA game and NHL game in recent years.

Yes, attendance is what I was referring to. Obviously TV ratings are a different story.

Soccer is one of those sports better in person because you can see how the players are moving around on the field. Except for the World Cup and the occasional English Premier League game, I'm not much interested in soccer on TV unless they can show me how the players are playing. The World Cup crews are doing a fantastic job of that; not sure that an MLS regular season game would get the same treatement.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

MLS is hard to watch without a rooting interest; it just isn't good enough yet. There are five or six EPL teams who when they play each other I will watch just for the sake of the game, with no preference for the winner. There are no MLS teams that are that interesting.

MLS is somewhere between Ligue1 and, I dunno, whatever the Turkish first division is.

I've started following the Quakes a little, but the team being nearby and easy to get tickets to definitely helps. I'd be lying if I said I gave two craps about the league before I started following them, and to be fair I only really started because we have friends in Seattle who were Sounders fans and it was fun to have a back and forth going with them. But once I got in it was fun to have a summer sport that had a little more build-up between every game than baseball; I'm more or less agreeing with you though that you have to get in to a local team before you really start caring somewhat about the league.
