Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

ESPN (SPI) has USA at 76% to advance, Sports Illustrated (FIFA) has the USA at 86% to advance.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

on that last sequence, bradley has to know there is under a minute left. don't try to play a ball back. just find a space in the portugal end and put it there. while we didn't defend well after that, it was still in transition off a turnover.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Oy. Our guys just didn't track back right there at the end, and Beasley isolated on Ronaldo is the nightmare scenario.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Can you imagine if it comes down to a coin toss? You think penalty kicks is a bad way to decide a soccer match?
Has it ever happened? Given that soccer is a relatively low scoring game, it's surprising that it hasn't.

The USA women ended up having it come down to penalties for the group once, IIRC, but that was because they were playing each other.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

In case you were wondering about Ronaldo's lightning bolt haircut...

Oops.
http://t.co/nvyjaKggpH

He got it cut to match the scar of a child who had surgery to remove a brain tumor last week. Ronaldo was approached to donate his shoes to an auction to benefit Erik Ortiz Cruz. Instead he offered to pay the entire $83,000 bill himself.
i can't stand the pretty boy but there are plenty of stories like that involving him so I can't hate the person, just the star athlete I guess...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

How head to head isn't the first tie breaker is appallingly stupid.

Makes no sense.
because they all play identical schedules and FIFA takes the whole of group play before one game...makes sense to me when you include card accumulation, suspensions, etc

That and they want teams to score goals.

When two/three teams are tied the breaker the first breaker should be head to head in all circumstances. It does not discourage scoring.

The US are idiots for not marking either of the two guys that mattered in the last rush, but they should not lose a breaker to Ghana nor should Germany lose one to Portugal.

With the current rules the Portugeese are all but eliminated and could easily quit and give up a field goal to Ghana.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Mentally the US is screwed, you could see it in their eyes after the game. The coach will have to be a master to get them back for the game against Germany

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Yesterdays game is tough to process.

US will tie with Portugal
Before the WC - Ecstatic!
After 1st game - OK...
After 5 min of game 2 - Happy.
After 94 minutes of game 2 - CRUSHED!!

In the big picture Germany still needs a result even with their goal differential to leave no doubt they advance so i think game 3 will be a draw. Neither team wants to leave the door open. Even if its not direct collusion, i think the flow of the game will show a tight to the vest style of play for both.

ESPN (SPI) has USA at 76% to advance, Sports Illustrated (FIFA) has the USA at 86% to advance.

And yet I feel like we're not gonna do it. I think Portugal lets Ghana steamroll them and then Germany scores in the 75th minute to knock us out.

Ghana doesn't need to steamroll Portugal, all they have to do is win and score 2 more goals than the US.

2-1 Ghana, 1-0 Germany is enough for Ghana to win...

While the score line you provide would have Ghana advance, ....Ghana would have 4 points and a 0 goal differential, US would have 4 points and 0 goal differential, Ghana would have 5 goals and US would have 4 goals....however, if it were 2-1 Ghana, 2-1 Germany, US would advance: both teams would have 4 points, 0 goal differential, and 5 goals scored, so the next tie-breaker would be head-to-head.

Basically, US wants to win or tie. Failing that, US wants to lose by no more than 1, hope that Ghana does not win by more than 1, and US has to score one less goal than Ghana scores.
