The end of leagues as we know?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Will you buy me a cookie if you are wrong? :)

And if Michigan Tech makes the NCAA Tournament within a few seasons will that change your opinion?

I've been attending Tech games since I was carried there in a car seat in the mid 80's. One of the biggest draws throughout the years of being utterly destroyed over and over again was the fact that I was seeing the best teams and players in the county actually coming to tiny little Houghton. True, we've been a doormat for years, but money is now finally being put into the program to hopefully return it to where it needs to be and now this happens? The timing here is absolutely terrible, I was looking forward to seeing Tech start climbing out of the whole and finally being relevant in the WHCA...

Losing the badgers and the gophers is not good for the conference, but I don't understand how making an elite conference is going to help the teams left when its only the WCHA top half plus Miami. I am surprised to see an announcement being touted without ND. What's the point if ND doesn't come along? I just don't see this shaking out well in the end and doing nothing but causing the small schools that have a long storied history in our niche sport to become irrelevant. I can't imagine either the B1G and the BHHC bringing DI hockey to the masses, college hockey will never be more than a niche sport and all these selfish moves by the bigger schools is doing nothing but hurting college hockey as a whole. We need more teams, not less...

On the postive... We may finally have a reasons to hate those ******** in Marquette again...

Someone explain to me how euthanizing a half dozen (or more) teams is supposed to be "good for the sport. Thanks, UND. :(
Including thriving teams, teams with brand new arenas and 4 teams that have 9 national titles combined.

:eek::(

Glad tUMD made the cut, but man this stinks. I don't see much good coming from this.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

That's fine. But is not relevant to the point I was making. I have no idea how much of those schools' fan bases are tied to the schools or not. I was just responding to someone chiding my school about our attendance only being a small percentage of our metro area's population. That is true, but most of Rochester's population is not currently targeted as potential customers, nor does it need to be. My point was that the comparison of "RIT drawing from the Rochester market" to "MSUM drawing from the Mankato market" is like apples and oranges for those institutions.
While there is a decent RIT alumni presence in the area, there is nowhere near the same presence (percentage-wise) of alumni as in a smaller "one-big-school" town like a Bemidji, or St. Cloud, or Mankato would have. So what you point out is not surprising, but still does not contradict my original point.

I didn't say that your point was wrong, I just know that some east coast people think that EVERYONE goes to SCSU, MSUM and BSU games in the community, and I was simply pointing out that almost everyone in the stands has either paid the institution for tuition at some point, or has gotten a check from them.

The sad end of an era and the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

That's about the most classless post I've ever seen. At the least, its poorly timed. But thanks none the less.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Look on the bright side, there are now 10 more teams that have a legitimate shot at making the tourney, provided the proper realignment occurs so that they get an autobid (which WILL happen). While all the speculation is that this will kill programs, it could also create more hockey powers by injecting interest and demand for excellence in places where it hasn't previously existed (recently at least). Look how far BSU came once they got a couple tourney bids.

the Key is what is ND going to do? If they go to Hockey East how does this make sense? Who is the other team invited? I find it weird a paper would say it is coming next week, but nobody will comment on it.... not saying it is not true, but at this point nobody knows what is true and what is not.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Just think - two years ago, SCSU was the lock to go to the It's Just Super Conference come B16 time, and now it's Western. Two years from now, they'll be kicking themselves and wishing they'd have brought an Alaska, or a Yooper school, or someone else who happens to be good right now.

And in two more years, the SuperFriends could be regretting everything, after four straight F4 appearances by the W, one by the BTHC and none by the BHHC.

There is no bright side. You're trying to polish a giant piece of elephant ****.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

According to Kevin Pates of the Duluth News Tribune. The official announcement will be made Wednesday in Colorado Springs.

They HAVE to know ND is in for them to do this.......one would think. All respect for UND is being lost. This does way more harm to college hockey than good. Really sad when it's a complete reaction to MN/WI being pulled into the BTHC by default.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

How does Western make the cut? They have one good year and somebody wants them?

They're in the MAC with Miami, and they're local. They'll also make a nice punching bag for the Notre Dame football team.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Will they be eligible for an AQ in year one? The NCAA is putting out more guidance on single sport conferences. I don't think they like them.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

You can blame the real problem (Jim Delany and the Big Ten); or,
You can admit how much power the University of North Dakota really has over college hockey. :D

Either way is a win in my eyes. ;)

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Announcement next week? The Grand Forks Herald says, "Yes."

http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/209049/

So now it makes even less sense. Seems pretty obvious Notre Dame isn't interested unless they can't work out something with Hockey East. So how does it help us to add only Miami, but dump teams like SCSU, BSU, Mankato? Couldn't we just add Miami?

There may still be a slim bit of hope. Assuming later this summer Notre Dame heads east, if I were SCSU, Mankato, et al, I'd be working **** hard to convince DU, UND and the rest of the merits of just bringing Miami into the WCHA fold.
