The end of leagues as we know?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

And that is why I suspect UMD was added to this plan.
FSN will need programming and with the UND and UMD there's two easy ways to fill the void and get at least a portion of the MSP media market.

You are kidding right? I mean I know you guys have this inflated self image but you cannot think that FSN is going to be rolling out the red carpet for UMD and UND can you? Do you really think it is worth the ad rate they will get in the cities?

The Gophers aren't leaving FSN North anyways. BTN holds the conference games FSN gets the rest. Also, I want you guys to try and guess who is part owner of the BTN. (I believe 49%) I will give you a clue, it is a station that only broadcasts your team when they play the Gophers or in the Final Five. (which they obviously wont do once that is dead) The chances FSN North is going to all of a sudden start showing games they didn't care about when they actually mattered to their broadcasted team (i.e. WCHA teams and the Gophers) is one of the most ludicrous things I have seen yet. They could show reruns of the Best ****ed Sports Show from 10 years ago and do better.

DL,

In the twins cities area the BTN is located right with the rest of the sports stations. (minus versus) For example in Minneapolis it goes 25 = ESPN, 26 = ESPN 2, 27 = BTN, 28 = FSN North. Everyone knows where the station can be found.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

If you're forming a new league, why would you allow only 2 of them to be on TV. No one in the Twin Cities cares about DU, CC, UNO, or Miami. So now FSN is out. The only real option is a low-tier national channel like Versus. If they are trying to lock up the TC market, I think they have a painful lesson coming. Maybe I'm wrong and they already have something in motion with FSN, but this seems to be a strange argument for UND/UMD to make. It would be more profitable for FSN to work with the new WCHA.
I just think that it is asinine that North Dakota and Denver think that there are enough people that care about them to justify a national TV deal. I didn't know they made people that stupid.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Not so sure about that. The BTN often will show a B1G team playing a non-conference. I think it depends on the who and the BTN has several channels to cater to the different fans.

I think you're confusing FOOTBALL & BASKETBALL with hockey. The only non-all Big Ten hockey game that I remember seeing was MN-North Dakota in 2010 (there may have been others, I'm just not aware of them). That also may be the only non-all Big Ten sporting event that I've seen on BTN that wasn't football or basketball. All of the volleyball/softball/baseball games were conference games, I believe.

Probably more like: "So, Northern and UAF for sure, should we take LSSU?"
The Leftover League, aka Island of Misfit Toys, just needs to make this their logo:

Nope. Not at all will UMD and UND replace all of what FSN is losing.
But FSN needs something to run when their old stalwart is running on "Jim Delany Television" and Fox College Sports and UND already have a national deal. Pretty easy solution for Fox.

PAC 10 basketball. They don't have to waste money on production costs.

You are correct that FSN will need something to run when Minnesota conference games are on TV....but it's going to be darts, World Poker Tour, and Big XII or Pac-12 women's basketball, not Sioux or Bulldog hockey.

I'd look for a lot more T-Wolves & Wild games on Friday & Saturday nights on FSN.....good news for those that want to watch "The King of Queens" on 45 during the same time slot.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Fox College Sports is already getting a production feed from the University of North Dakota (started last year). They've been running it nationally. I'll watch that and just think of you as the "king of queens".

Duluth newspaper today.

"A consulting firm to provide conference branding guidance and a possible television package was hired. The Versus network is said to be a possible Super League media outlet."

Not on my cable package. BTN is up in the 60s with Versus.

Duluth newspaper today.

From that link ... McLeod says ...
“I haven’t heard from any one of the schools about why they’re leaving. With Minnesota and Wisconsin leaving, you can’t be what you were as a league, but we would’ve still had a good, solid league. I just wish people would’ve stopped, taken a deep breath, taken a step back and thought about what they were giving up. What was the rush? These (five) teams can’t blame WCHA (inefficiency) for their actions. This is in their lap."

Way to go Bruce. Thanks for the link Damien. So awesome to come across that while reading about the BHHC's imagined/hoped for Versus TV Deal.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Michigan, MSU & OSU are leaving Miami & the CCHA. Miami HAD to make this move.

As for Miami alone, yes, that's absolutely true. My understanding is Miami had more to do with Super League (or whatever) than most people realize. I don't think they (and maybe Notre Dame) ever had any intention of joining the WCHA.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Panic?

If your goal is to expand your shot at getting into the NCAA tournament, a lot of schools just saw their chances markedly improve. Why, because if you remove the big dogs from the conference, then the little nippers are suddenly able to get to the food pile that was previously denied them. Putting all the big dogs in one conference lessens their shot at grabbing an at large bid.

Think about it. SOMEBODY has to win the West(left)over conference. And few of them have, as CHN put it, not had a chance at playing for an NCAA AQ in quite a while. Now they do. That should mean something to the recruiting and to the fan/alumni base. Yea, Michigan is not coming through that door, but you were not going to beat Michigan anyway. But now Lake State is coming twice and we hate Lake State because their (name of other sports team), knocked us out of the D-II (sport) tournament last year. See, it can work, if it is marketed correctly.

Frankly, I hope we're not done. I want 8 AQ's and 8 at larges. That spreads the wealth around and makes the conference tournaments a bit more exciting than they are now.

If they hadn't fractured the WCHA, they Miami wouldn't have had much choice but to join the WCHA.

Also true, but we still don't know about Notre Dame.

What was their role? I always figured that they were the one's bringing in Western Michigan.

They panicked alright. Last season's final Pairwise Rankings:

1). North Dakota

4). Minnesota-Duluth

6). Miami

7). Denver

10). Notre Dame

12). Nebraska-Omaha

13). Colorado College

14). Western Michigan

Throw in 17 National Championships. Plus all eight teams made the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Not too shabby.
Using a one year sample size is colossally stupid. Omaha, duluth and western michigan are not contenders every year.
