The definitive tournament speculation thread

my guess is that they are ranking teams that shouldn't be ranked in the west, then they will switch which teams are ranked from week to week, making more ranked teams in the west so that teams have a better record against ranked teams to try and sneak a pool C out west.

This was my thought

Then I don't understand why they have Stout in the #4 spot when Stout is done playing. If your theory was correct, we'd see Superior or even Point in that spot.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

It appears that once Ranked, always ranked. The table links at the bottom of the presser have the NCAA records vs. ranked teams.

Selection Sundae's selection discussion (with live remotes from the Mobius Club in Vadnais Heights, Pete's Pretzel Emporium in Rochester, The Whine and (close but) no Cigar bar in Geneseo, and Raleigh Rathskeller), will be most entertaining.....

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Chiming in a bit late here on "whats what" of the newest NCAA regional rankings but I find it odd how much Plattsburgh and I think Norwich bumped up from last week. I think they were 5-6th? I would think that the NCAA would not jump a team, or two like that in one week based on a weekend of games. Considering Plattsburgh played only Potsdam this weekend and each other team did win their respective games as well, with Castleton even beating NCAA favorite Middlebury. The only thing I can see is they are leaving themselves room for "certain teams" to drop a few seeds if they were to lose out earlier in there conference tournaments? Think about how much Plattsburgh would drop, if any if they were to lose to Morrisville or Oswego...or if Oswego were to lose out and/or Plattsburgh won the SUNYAC what would happen then? That trend would somehow have Plattsburgh taking over the top seed somehow? NOT that it matters. It looks like the NCAA wants both those teams as well as Elmira and at least Norwich to get in.

I stay totally out of the selection discussion. I treasure my sanity.

All I do is sit back and wait to see which games I can get to cover.

But, I'd love to know where this Pete's Pretzel Emporium is... ;)

I think Plattsburgh was 5th last week. They jumped Norwich (Plattsburgh should have been ahead of them last week - I couldn't find any reason for Norwich ranked higher). The jump over Utica? That one surprised me, until I looked up the comparison. Plattsburgh wins WIN%, COP, and RNK. Utica wins SOS. Plattsburgh seems to have the upper hand in that comparison right now...

I'm not sure I'll have much to add this year. I'm to the point where I think I can nail the field perfectly (aside from maybe some lower Eastern seedings) without expending much effort. I now operate on the "because I said so" premise, but we'll see what I can cook up. The machine is running...I just haven't said anything about it...yet.

Besides, it's far more fun to watch Josh and Matt flail away for a month or so. After that it's time for the professionals to step in. :)

Awww, c'mon. Get your AIM account and join-in on all the fun that is the Selection Sunday AOL IM Discussion Room!! The entertainment value simply can't be beat for what it costs (which is nothing, of course). :-)

"The Room" will be deployed and running as-usual. So pull-up a six-pack (or for some of us, a wee-bit more... you mentioned sanity???), grab your popcorn, and try to get some enjoyment out of this annual NCAA <STRIKE>fiasco</STRIKE> event.

Hmm... sleep, or selection sunday chatroom??? Decisions, decisions.

And Utica owns the PWC over Norwich .....Norwich jumped over them ??? ***

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Are we all agreed that the losers of tonight's games are dead for NCAA picking purposes??

No Plattsburgh will still be very much alive...if they are better off losing to an unranked team. Especially if the other close Pool C candidates fall early in their tourney...outside of Plattsburgh, yes probably everyone is done.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Again, I will make my annual cant-miss prediction: The NCAA will pull something out of their butts and do something NOBODY predicts. I'm right every year about that one.

I think this statement is accurate with every NCAA sport at every level. :)

I know there have been some weird rankings and selections each and every year that get people all riled up, but Plattsburgh's season has to be right up there. The fact that they have SO MANY bad losses and it helps them is crazy. There RNK is good, but there UNRNK is not good. I know how the process works, but it still blows my mind that those games don't hurt them more.

Losing to a bad team is better than losing to a good team...of course beating a ranked team is better than beating a bad team.

Sadly, no. I, unfortunately, will not be around for Selection Sunday this year. I will be fulfilling other responsibilities at that time by cruising in the Caribbean. The only ice I'll be seeing are the ones keeping my beers cold.

I realize leaving you at the mercy of Josh is a sick and twisted thing to do, but it is a sacrifice I'm just going to have to make.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Its a shame that Morrisville is D. O. A. As someone who was there, it was an awesome game. Morrisville us real tough, and as much as I enjoyed taunting them (and I really, really did) they were worthy opponents. They have played tough hockey this year against us in what is arguably the toughest league in DIII. I for one am glad we don't have to play them in the NCAA's, they should have nothing but pride in there season.
