The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Serena Williams is the only other women's sports figure who could die the same day as a influential NFL defensive coordinator and still garner the top headlines.

I might consider Billie Jean King and Martina. Dorothy Hamill, maybe.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

First two: legendary tennis players. Dominant.
Dorothy: legendary/America's sweetheart ice skater.

Yes, I am well aware. In fact, I was a kid when Martina dominated. I was speaking on behalf of my generation, most of whom do not watch tennis, and barely remember Michelle Kwan.

Who?

Kidding. Although she really was a footnote.

Summitt was....Jebus. She was a true legend. One of the best coaches in any sport ever.

Michelle, sadly, was the Vancouver Canucks of figure skating. Great backstory (working class family in a traditionally richie-rich sport), plenty of talent, dominated the qualifying awards...but cracked under pressure when it came time to win the one award that matters most (within the context of the sport, of course). And then the slate of injuries that ended her 2006 ambitions.

Parents and I were big fans in the day. I still have a little grudge against Tara Lipinski...OK, not really. :p

Not following basketball all that much, I was only vaguely familiar with her name and accomplishments.

Let's put it this way: IMO, she was the only competition that UConn ever had.

Overall coaching record: 1098–208 (.841)

Never had a losing season at Tennessee.

I saw some clips of Dorothy Hamilton a while back. She was a sweetheart but it was funny seeing how there werent many jumps or tough athletic moves compared to today. Doesn't seem like it was that long ago

No, any young, current female athlete (in a sport ESPN cares about) dying would garner top headlines, because of the unexpected nature of it.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

And Buddy Ryan isnt exactly in the news these days. He has been out of coaching for a long *** time and the 85 Bears was 30 years ago. I dont think he is a name that people younger than 30 would care that much about.

Pat Summit was a great coach, but we should remember that Women's basketball for much of her reign wasnt super strong. Once UConn rose to power Tennessee never quite was the same. Great rivalry though :)

Sounds like women's hockey.

Was this an auto correct issue? Cuz it's Dorothy Hamill. :)
