The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Given that Priceless was something like his third or fourth username - I only know of 93Champs, off the top of my head, so it shouldn't be unexpected.

Gee, I haven't noticed any new raging a-hole *******s on the board lately. :p

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

That's actually an interesting question. Which "mainstream" celebrity will hit you the hardest when they pass? What about all public figures?

I think for me, one was Roger Ebert. That one sucked ***. I love his writing, I love that he truly loved his craft, and he was dam good at it. Not sure if he would fall under "mainstream". Paul Wellstone might be slightly ahead of Ebert though.

In terms of mainstreams celebrities, I think that would have to be Craig Ferguson. The guy is too brilliant for what he's doing now. Though I don't really know if I'd be hit that hard with any mainstreams.

If you're including sports stars, it was Kirby Puckett for me. That was tough.

Good discussion starter.

Jerry Garcia's death hit me pretty hard at the time, though now it was twenty years ago. More because of the cause of death (I knew the Dead did a lot of drugs but I never expected any of those drugs to be heroin  ).

Maybe Mick Jagger's would. When icons of your youth start to die, it really reminds you of how far ago your youth has become.

Ron Howard's might hit me, again more as a reminder of my own mortality than any particular affection toward him personally. Though I first watched The Andy Griffith Show in reruns, still, to have Opie Taylor pass away in his 60s would be weird.

I'm a bit jaded toward "celebrities" these days, at one time a person was a celebrity because of actual accomplishments.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

I'll be sad when Jimmy Carter finally passes. Regardless of how one views his politics, he is one of the best men who has ever held political office and a reminder that people of conscience still can connect up with power and at least be in the position to do good.

Dr. Mrs. will really feel it when Ursula Le Guin shapes-shifts to whatever her next plane of existence is. She even wears a bracelet (courtesy of yours truly) inscribed WWULGD.

I can't think of a celebrity off of the top of my head, but when Clinton passes it will be big for my age group (born in 1983) as the Clinton era was basically our middle/high school, so that will truly mean any last vestiges of our childhood are gone.

Yep, I'll second Clinton. His presidency defined the 90s, and mirrored my elementary/middle school years. Gas was cheap, massive luxury SUVs ruled the roads, everyone who wanted a job could get one, and it seemed like the sky was the limit back then. It's funny to think that the country's most serious concern was whether or not he was getting BJs in the Oval.

I'll forgive you since you were in elementary in the early 90s, but a few good dot-com years toward the end do not a decade make.

Remember which election "It's the economy, stupid" came from - and led to the only single-term president over the last 35 years.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Second Carter and Kep's commentary. No matter how I feel about his politics I respect him as a man who lives his faith, actively trying to do good without a whole lot of fanfare.

Fair enough. And that was an "itty bitty" recession by recent standards.

I'll concede Slick Willy was in the right place at the right time and had little to do with the economic bubble, but that doesn't change the circumstances of his tenure in office, nor what his immediate successor did with that surplus when the bubble burst. However, hindsight is 20/20.

He was not a good president but might be the best "elder statesman" the country has ever had.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Oh, if we're going the TV personality route, I've got one to add.

John McLaughlin.

My parents and I used to watch his group of spin doctors every Sunday morning on weekends when we were up north, often because the local PBS affiliate is the only effing station that will come in over antenna up there. His show has been on the air spanning 4 decades now - that's longer than any scripted show, and far more entertaining than a majority of them.

When he goes, it'll be the end of a pioneer - the guy that arguably gave rise to all the cable news panels you see flapping their gums today.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

You know what? I think I've got one. Locally when Joe Soucheray or Pat Reusse start writing for the big newspaper in the sky, that's going to be a sad day for me.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

My heart hurt when George Harrison died. I still miss the quiet one.

As for ones that are still going, Dave Grohl kicking the bucket will sting. He's not too much older than I am really, so he may outlive me. But if he doesn't that's going to suck.

Agreed. If the averages play out, he's going to be making killer music for at least another 20 years, and playing for 30.

Wasting Light is a Top 5 album of the past 15 years for me.

Arguably the last great true musically talented Rock Star we'll see.
