The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Du78 -- I take it you didn't learn his name.

I had a feeling that the news wasn't good. Knowing he was in radio news in Phoenix I did some checking to try to come up with who he was but no luck. I'll miss my news colleague and fellow conservative.

RIP friend.

His name was Jerry Hudson. Although i did not always agree with him, I found him to be a wonderful addition to this board. His wealth of knowledge, his experience and his stories will be (and have been) missed. I used to correspond with him at times and I had known for some time that he was gone but was not sure it appropriate to post. Although he was quite outspoken here, he was a very private and sensitive man. I have been participating in discussions here since 1999 and have come to appreciate many of those who put their 2¢ up here about things they care about. I truly feel badly when we lose a contributing member (well, perhaps there are a couple I would not miss). RIP Old Pio - know that many of us feel the loss.

Well put. Whether or not you agreed with him, he provoked discussion. Sometimes arguments, sometimes healthy debate. Either way, we all engaged in conversation, and to me, that is a good thing. I apologize for maybe romanticizing his membership here, but his passing has hit me harder than I thought was possible. :(

Brent: After the past 18 months of my life and the events that occurred, I have an almost entirely new perspective. I no longer will waste my time arguing with the uninformed (or just plain stupid). I really enjoy some of the banter here which is why i continue to monitor at times. Life is far too short and time too precious to waste. There are some wonderfully bright posters on here and I actually learn more here than from any other media source. Both Jen and I have worked hard to create wonderful life for ourselves but within that life we have experienced some horrible catastrophic events. But we are no different from others who have also had tough times. It is when something like this happens, that we realize even more how tenuous life truly is and that we should enjoy as much of it as we can. i suppose what I am really saying is for those who make it so enjoyable to read and post here, please keep it going. For those others, well, you know where you can go.

This. I most certainly didn't agree with many things but I learned some valuable lessons from being involved with the conversations he started. [most importantly when to shut up and not reply anymore! not an easy thing for me Still on the learning curve..... :p]

Well put Doc. I agree with what you say about how tenuous life is. That was one of the reasons I took an early departure from law enforcement 21 years ago. Seeing guys I went through the academy with losing battles with cancer and other health issues as well as my wife's own health scare made us realize there was more to life than patrolling the streets of my city.

Not to be critical of many of the regulars here, but I think that we of the older generations have a different perspective on life now than when we were young and full of ****** and vinegar. That's perhaps part of what drove <strike>OP</strike> Jerry to spur the debates in the way he did. I suppose that it's all part of the aging process.

God speed, Jerry.

Listened to that and a few others easily found out there. The one they were talking about Ernie Banks dying was classic Old Pio. The anecdotes were there and told with that same flair. I'm going to miss him.

SteveP, I have known Jerry for quite some time mostly through the internet but we also have a number of mutual friends. I know we crossed paths at DU but he was a few years older than me. In the last decade, we regularly traded e-mails but in the off-season not so much. I did not visit USCHO regularly in the off-season so it didn't occur to me that something may have happened to him. When he didn't show up in the game threads this season I did a little digging. I didn't find an obit but I did fine this tribute to him from his colleagues at KFAB in Omaha. He did a weekly piece for them from Phoenix the last few years.

For those who don't know much about Old Pio he was originally from the Chicago area who started his undergraduate career at the University of Illinois. He transferred to DU and became the radio voice of the Pioneers in the late 1960s and called the 1968 National Championship game. He was good friends with those players and so all the stories he told over the years about the players and Murray were first hand accounts. Murray got him his first job outside of DU and he was forever grateful for that. I know he had radio and TV broadcast stints in Omaha, Tampa, Houston and Phoenix and maybe a few other spots I don't know about. His beverage of choice was Crown Royal over ice. At some point in his younger years he served in the U.S. Air Force. As I recall one of the bases he was stationed at was in New Foundland in Canada. Raise your glasses of Crown Royal to Old Pio!

We have now lost two of our most colorful and knowledgeable DU posters in Jimbo and Old Pio. RIP to the both of you :(

Thank you for that, du78. Listening to Jerry's on-air comments, it is not too difficult to put a voice to some of the things he posted here. It is clear his professional associates considered his crustiness as an endearing quality, and some of that is showing through here.

"Here's something funny for ya: Goodbye!" CLASSIC. :D

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

The audio accounts are interesting and pretty indicative of his time here. I will leave it at that.

I will say that on a rare occasion, one would see a couple posts when OP wasn't being...well, OP. He knew how to press certain buttons, and while I fully believe there is always at least a kernel of truth/real personality in every post, when he wasn't doing his bit, he was one of the better posters on here; surprising, I know, but I have to address that facet of his personality.
