I never said footy. The Indian Super League is footy. The Indian Premier League is cricket. I like the IPL. Maybe E$PN- covers the ISL, but I've never watched it. The IPL (especially RCB [the Red Sox of the IPL]) I watch religiously.

Saurabh Netravalkar, who bowled the super over for the U.S., is a former under-19 player for India’s national team. Netravalkar moved to the U.S. after his time playing for India, went to Cornell, and now works a full-time job with Oracle.
 
Afghanistan is putting a hurting to New Zealand. Needing 160, NZ is 54-7 after 10.3 overs.

I thought I read awhile ago the US did a big campaign naturalize guys to build up a squad for this. Certainly a monumental upset since it’s, you know, Pakistan, but it’s not like there’s been a huge swell in cricket talent in the US. Though there has been a lot of investment the last five years.

Not like it doesn’t happen in other sports. Usually the softball tournaments end up being Japan, Australia, Canada, the US and 2-4 other countries with teams of 90-100% Americans with ancestry. And I think the Philippines team was all Americans in the Women’s World Cup.

From the articles I was reading it looks like we just went out and bought ringers. But like Jim said, a win's a win. If you look at the top 100 "American" chess players about 10 were born here.

It could also be quasi-legitimate like Great Britain's titles in ice hockey where all the British were from Canada, but, hey, The Empire.
 
Today's goal for the USA v India up in NYC -- keep it close. We may need a favorable Net Run Rate to advance.

A washout v Ireland later this week in Lauderdale FL, clinches advancement to the Round of 8.

Mostly kidding. I've attended a few cricket matches both in England and in Bahrain. It's entertaining to a point, but compared with other international fare such as football, rugby and Aussie rules it doesn't do that much for me.

I've been watching Aussie rules semi-regularly since the pandemic hit and it was one of the last sports standing before being shutdown. Really want to go to a game if I ever make it to Australia. Go Swans!
 
Interesting quirk in the points system. A win is two, a loss is zero, but a rainout gets one. US vs Ireland got rained out so the US ended with 5 points to Pakistan’s 4 and advanced to the next round. The US likely would have beat Ireland anyway, but it was more beneficial to have a rain out than lose, because a loss could’ve sent them home on the net run rate.

I don't think we stand a chance of advancing. I like 1-2-0 and a 3rd place finish with a barely negative NRR.
 
South Africa scored 194 in their innings. We're going to have to bat at our finest against some pretty good bowlers.

Update: We got 176.

All in all, not a bad result, but the next 2 are going to be a lot tougher.

It seems there was some doubts whether the Afghanistan squad could get USA visas, hence why all the medal round games are in the WIndies.
