What Does Nancy Pelosi Think She’s Doing in Taiwan?
A risky trip seems more about dramatic gestures than actual help.

(Mike Chinoy in Foreign Policy)

But now that word is out, the United States faces a dilemma. If Pelosi does not go, it will appear that Washington is allowing the Chinese government to fix limits on the nature of U.S. engagement with Taiwan. That could reinforce Beijing’s already strong belief that the United States is a declining power and that China’s increasingly assertive international behavior is paying off. (To be sure, China’s global image has collapsed, and investors are fleeing, but there’s little willingness inside the party state to point out uncomfortable facts to the leadership that set those policies.) Moreover, it would provide ammunition for Republican critics of Biden to accuse him of being soft on China.

However, if Pelosi ignores Beijing’s warnings, it could trigger a dangerous new crisis over Taiwan. There has already been speculation that China’s People’s Liberation Army, which has staged a series of increasingly bold incursions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) over the past year, might seek to prevent the U.S. military aircraft Pelosi would travel in from landing or perhaps even declare its own ADIZ over Taiwan—a step that, at a minimum, could complicate the supply chain for the island’s globally crucial semiconductor industry. One China scholar has warned that Beijing will respond with “unprecedented countermeasures—the strongest it has ever taken since the Taiwan Strait crises.”

Look weaker globally (and further embolden the CCP) or possibly trigger Taiwan Strait 2.0. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Do we know the agenda for the trip? Even the article states, "the circumstances surrounding a possible Pelosi visit remain extremely muddled."

If the trip happens ... US military making plans in case Pelosi travels to Taiwan

I do not envy Mr Biden in trying to find a way through this.

AJ is running a program, "What’s needed for lasting peace between Israelis, Palestinians?"

My guess: the comprehensive genocide of either side by the other.

Yeah, I don't mean to be glib and I realize that discussing this situation is basically navigating through various landmines, but...

Neither side is particularly acting in good faith, however the relegation of the Palestinians to barely second class citizens has to stop for there to be anything remotely approaching "peace". My Republican Christian Go-Israel! dad was just there and came back horrified by the treatment of the Palestinians. This is a guy who told me he knew more about how Antifa was burning down the city of Portland than my friends that actually live there, and his eyes were opened on this.

There's no excuse for the rocket attacks on civilian areas. But there's similarly no excuse for how Palestinians are treated (or the encouragement of the Israeli settlements, or like a zillion things).

It's complicated and there is no "if <they> would just do..." solution. I agree with you Kep. Either one side is eliminated or this goes on in perpetuity.

Elsewhere in the world, Finland's PM is getting the AOC treatment after video of the 36 year old PM surfaced of her dancing and having fun at a private house party.

Old white men sure do hate young women having fun without them, don't they?

It's one thing if you're a rep and going out and enjoying life.
it's another if you have chosen, under your own free will, to be the leader of a country. I'm actually a firm believer that you need to be a psychopath to be a leader of a large country. You owe it to your people to sacrifice your family time and a lot of other shit. If you want to act like a 30-year-old, get a different job.

There are legislate concerns with a leader of a country - being threatened by Russia - not being able to be reached via phone.

now, I'll follow this up with much of what is lobbed at her is sexist nonsense.

She was elected by the people but that doesn't mean she can't have a private lift outside that job. Not having her work phone with her was a mistake that likely won't happen again, and I also imagine if she's at another private party phones will not be allowed. Meh.
