The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

That is the Aral Sea in your picture there.

I do see there were several articles about Baikal in 2015 where there was concern for shrinking but can't find anything since though I'm sure there is still great concern among the smart folks. Lower than normal snowfall in the mountains around has meant less runoff to fill.

I should not have included "shrink" in my initial google.

The Times regrets the error.

IIRC, the Aral's shrinkage is largely the result of poor and wasteful irrigation practices from the time of Soviet-controlled Uzbekistan. They became the world's #1 exporter of cotton for a time (and Top 5 in child labor, of course), but largely at the expense of that body of water.

Yeah, without looking it up to confirm, I think they effectively drained the lake.

30% of every country. Just keep them out of politics.

We need a polity where they can't vote, it's that simple. You come up with the theory. Something something democracies cannot commit suicide something.

The amygdala hominids aren't up to it, like children and the insane. If you don't accept democracy you don't get to be a part of it.

The fate of all lakes.

If you want to see shrinkage, try [strikethrough]Baikal[/strikethrough] Aral.

Lake Superior added a full foot to its depth this spring. I’d have to look up the specs, but I think that added over 4.4 trillion gallons of water to it volume.

Australia just kicked out their righty government.

Early counting showed a strong swing towards Greens candidates and Independents who demanded emissions cuts far above the commitments made by the ruling conservative coalition.

Maybe the fuckstick fever that gave us reactionary governments all over the world the last decade is starting to break.

Helps when your entire country is on fire followed by once a century pandemic

Does it, though?

I think fascism is more likely to be ascendant when times are tough. That's when the feeble-minded and feeble-hearted long for a strongman, and it's when Liberals and Leftists are most likely to be in conflict as the former preach "priorities" which are the preference of their comforts over substantive change to address the inequality of the system.

That's a good point. But I'd argue it's typically economic tough times, not "Jesus Christ our country is on fire and we could have had what New Zealand had."
