Hong Kong. A glimpse of our future.

Hong Kong police arrested media tycoon Jimmy Lai and raided the publisher’s headquarters Monday in the highest-profile use yet of a new national security law Beijing imposed on the city in June.

“Jimmy Lai is being arrested for collusion with foreign powers at this time,” Mark Simon, an executive of Lai’s media group and his aide, wrote on Twitter.

The 71-year-old owns popular tabloid Apple Daily and is an outspoken pro-democracy figure in Hong Kong who regularly criticizes China’s authoritarian rule and Hong Kong’s government.

Masked and wearing a blue shirt and a light gray blazer, Lai was led out of his mansion in Kowloon by police officers also wearing surgical masks and was taken away. He was later brought to the headquarters of his media company Next Digital, where a police raid was ongoing according to a livestreamed video by staff. Lai remained in the offices for two and a half hours before police took him away in a car.

This is the most challenging crisis to democracy since WW2. A majority of the most powerful (and dangerous) nations on Earth are in the grip of authoritarian regimes or at risk. That hasn't happened since the Germans were bombing London.

2. Russia: inept kleptocratic dictatorship with strong authoritarian cult leader
3. China: thorough totalitarian dictatorship
4. Japan: corporatocracy with growing fascist right
5. India: corrupt plutocratic ethno-state with authoritarian cult leader
6. France: democratic republic with growing fascist right
7. South Korea: corporatocratic client state of US
8. Italy: corrupt democratic republic with fascist faction
9. UK: democratic republic with growing fascist right and weak authoritarian cult leader
10. Turkey: quasi-theocratic ethno-state with strong authoritarian cult leader

If the US can excrete the fascists -- and reform so they can never take power again -- then I don't see an existential crisis for the Earth since the US is such a dominant military force. But if the US becomes another Russia then the world will have a majority power balance of authoritarian regimes for the first time in at least 150 years. With modern weapons and surveillance technology.

BTW this is how big China is: Zhuhai is part of the Pearl River District, which I had never heard of. The PRD is 625 square miles, the size of Oklahoma City. It has 64 million people -- that is thirty Chicagos.

To be fair, Chicago metro is just under 10M, so you could have gone with 6.5 Chicago’s - and still proven the point.

China has 113 cities with population greater than 1 million. The US has 10.

MILAN — From “heroes” to “terrorists.” In Italy, the doctors and nurses lauded for their exhausting, dangerous work in the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic are facing a new challenge: conspiracy theories accusing them of faking the emergency.

In one social media video, two women tell the camera they are in the emergency room at Sacco Hospital in Milan, one of the hardest-hit cities in Italy. They want to prove that the ER is empty, contrary to what is being reported by journalists, who have sounded the alarm about a drastic uptick in cases.

The women go inside the building, showing viewers a calm, empty interior. Next, they walk back outside to demonstrate there are no ambulances lined up. Doctors, journalists, and politicians have been lying, they say. “They are terrorists.”

The video, which was shared thousands of times, is a fake. The rooms it features are not located in the emergency wing of the hospital, which are in fact full. Nor does the video show the places outside the hospital where ambulances regularly wait, lined up one after another, to discharge seriously ill patients.

Similar accusations have proliferated on Facebook, Telegram, WhatsApp and countless other mediums, where posters claim ambulances are driving around aimlessly without patients on board, or turning on their sirens simply to scare people.

Others share images of deserted hospitals and theorize that doctors fabricated the emergency so they can earn more money. Still others recommend eating avocados to keep at bay a virus they insist is no more serious than a flu.
