The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

Indonesia. This is the Citarum River. Let that sink in, since nothing else will. It is supposedly the most polluted river in the world

Bulgaria bids to become the new conservative fantasy destination.

When I was in Bulgaria, I saw a fair amount of swaztika tags the cities along with much more frequent soccer related tags -- for example, lots of "CSKA" tags in the city of Ruse.

CSKA is the pro team from Sofia -- Central Sports Club of the Army (Bulgarian: Централен Спортен Клуб на Армията), and their fans leave their tag behind in other cities. Interestingly the use the latin alphabet for the CSKA tag instead of ЦСКА.).

Their soccer fans are known for being racist: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50060759. I went to a FC Dunav vs FC CSKA game while I was there. There were a couple black players. I imagine they hear some awful things from opposing fans.

Still planning a trip back, but yeah...

I naively thought the relatively large number of Muslims and Turkic people in Bulgaria would hold that stuff down, but maybe it makes it worse (c.f., states with the largest percentage of blacks have the worst white racists).

So, I noticed that the English language edition of DW Online skews heavily towards British and American stories, which, who cares?, but they also offer the native German edition with algorithm English translation.

It's remarkably coherent translation considering it's by machine but often the results are... magical. Today's feature headline, which is about COVID: "We Romanians love to be in the middle of the action!"
