Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

Appreciate all you do with this, Ralph. Not knowing the work involved, what are the chances of a Connecticut belt since we have 4 teams and the Connecticut Ice Tourney?

I added it. Now someone has to create the history which I am sure starts with Yale. It should not be too hard. Conceivably Connecticut had a team at some point in ancient history, but from the founding of ECAC D-I, Yale was the only team for a long time.

And before someone says it again, there are only three teams in Colorado and in Ohio. :D

Digging around at this- I presume you only count games against legit NCAA opposition? So Yale losing to their own Alumni in 1905 or to the "New Haven Bears" is irrelevant?

Yes, don't count them. Before the NCAA was formed, it's any legitimate college in CT.

Okay. Is Yale born with the belt, or does it spring into being in the first game between Connecticut teams? Yale first played in antiquity. UConn has their first season in 1960. They played Wesleyan in that first year, but Wesleyan's records online only go back to 1971-72. Connecticut beat Wesleyan in '60-'61, '61-'62, and '62-'63 (no individual dates listed), but then lost to the Cardinals in 1963-64. Wesleyan has no record of this game. UConn then beat Wesleyan every year until Wesleyan's record book picks up. So we COULD be fairly certain that UConn held the belt into the early 1970's, except....

Trinity existed. And Trinity's records pick up AFTER Wesleyan's, but we can be fairly certain they played (probably twice!) each year in the 1960's. Trinity first appears on UConn's schedule in 1968-69. There is also a "New Haven" that appears on Wesleyan's early 1970's schedules, and based upon the fact that every single other listing is a school I feel confident that is the University of New Haven and not the old New Haven Bears of antiquity. Fairfield also starts making some appearances on schedules in the early 1970's.

My instinct is to asterisk the 1963-64 game and say that Wesleyan may have played Trinity, New Haven, or Fairfield before they lost to UConn the next year.

Well, here's what I've got. We need to track down 1960's Wesleyan and Trinity results.

Did Yale not play any of the other CT schools? I would start with them, as you said "in antiquity".

Starting with the 61-62 season the ECAC formed. Wesleyan and UConn were not members, so I would not consider them eligible at the point. Starting with 64-65, ECAC broke off into ECAC-I and ECAC-II (see https://www.augenblick.org/chha/ecac_stn.html), I would only consider those listed here as eligible which would mean that until the other three schools become eligible, Yale would keep the Belt. Sean Pickett should know exactly when.

Fairfield was indeed eligible for a while when they were in the MAAC. I forgot them.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

Also, I apologize for the third straight post, but we need a ruling on D1 vs. D3. At some point UConn's schedule took a turn for the sub Division 1. After 1971 Yale didn't play UConn again until 1999. The 1960's Huskies were playing a reasonable schedule (UNH, Vermont, lesser Ivies, a drubbing or two against Wisconsin...), eventually by the early 1970s it was more small college.

Making some reasonable guesses, I got it to a Fairfield win over Wesleyan on January 10, 1974. Neither Trinity nor UConn provide dates on their schedules from antiquity, and Fairfield and New Haven have no records whatsoever.

As for where this belt is now, my best guess is that this belt either died with New Haven in the early 1980's or is still rattling around the NESCAC. UConn's last D-3 game was a loss to Conn College in the ECAC playoffs. That would have been a belt game if UConn held it at that point. The last games New Haven played against UConn, Trinity, and Wesleyan all appear to be wins. No idea on Fairfield. Conn College and Sacred Heart didn't appear until after New Haven's demise.

You are the czar of the belt, so I'll defer to your judgment. My vote would be to start the belt in Yale's possession, which would bring in the 1971 game against UConn, and then sit dormant until 1999.

I typed slow. Okay. I agree with your judgment. Apologies to Trinity, Wesleyan, Conn College, and New Haven.

Yale didn't play any in state games until that one-off with UConn in the early 1970's. From there, it was after they all joined (re-joined?) D-I in 1999.

I wouldn't count a 1971 game against UConn. They were not D-I then. 1989-99 was when the MAAC formed. That was probably Yale's next game if they played any of the MAAC CT schools.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

Well, the 1971 game's includability is immaterial. Yale won and moved on until 1999. I'll toss it on there as a fun "look how much Yale HATED playing in state schools" note and you can remove it if you want. I'm through 2012, have this done soon (this conference I am at is REALLY boring).

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

Behold, the Connecticut belt. This is actually Sacred Heart's second time holding the belt (11/22/01, SHU 7-Yale 6). If they defend it once, it will be the first time they have defended the CT Belt. UConn has also held the CT Belt for exactly one game: UConn 4-Quinnipiac 1 10/21/14. The first defense was a loss to Yale.

I didn't do math on number of days/times held for Yale or Quinnipiac. Regardless of whether we count the 1971 game, Yale certainly holds the days with belt record due to playing in-state schools VERY sporadically until Quinnipiac joined the ECAC.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

If four is the magic number, where's the Boston belt, AKA St. Boltoph's belt, the Beanbelt, the Boston Gut Strangler, the Dirty Water Waistband?

Actually there is one. It just do not post it. See post #31.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

Ralph, what are the Div II and Div III play up belts. Thanks

They are Belts only contested by schools which are not D-I in all sports. I must admit that I was testing if all errors which I make are caught. Sacred Heart is not a D-II play-up school. :)

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part IV

So how is the Beanpot belt being handled with the new Beanpot OT format? After some quick thought BC had to have brought it into the tournament, so do they still have it, having not lost for NCAA purposes?

As long as they do not use fewer players or shootouts, the games count as wins.
