The rule which was set up originally is that any meeting counts. It doesn't have to be a league game. The Yale-QU game for the NCAA championship in 2013 counted for the ECAC Belt also. It could have been done the other way also.

It's also the reason why last season UAA won the WCHA belt off of Wisconsin.

Actually UAA got the old WCHA Belt which UW had when it left the WCHA. Two new WCHA Belts were set up on 10/25/2013, the first day on which WCHA teams played each other last season. Those two Belts were unified on 11/29/2013 and that Belt was unified with the old one on 01/10/2014. See below.

Wisconsin had The WCHA Belt when it left the league. The Third WCHA Belt is started.
