The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

I checked the playup belt and found the following:

Code:
03/29/1980 North Dakota ((may be 03/28/1980 (unlikely))

3/29 is definitely correct, the NCAA record book and newspapers at the time both agree.

Code:
< 12/12/1992 Minnesota Duluth
< 02/12/1993 Michigan Tech (may be 02/13/1993)
---
> 12/12/1992 Minnesota Duluth
> 01/16/1993 Denver
> 02/12/1993 Michigan Tech

I think you lost a line here. Michigan Tech beat Denver on 2/12/93. 2/12 is the correct date: http://lists.maine.edu/cgi/wa?A2=ind9302&L=hockey-l&T=0&P=28687

Code:
03/20/1999 Denver
10/23/1999 Alaska Anchorage
10/29/1999 Minnesota State
10/30/1999 Alaska Anchorage
11/12/1999 North Dakota

Denver was not eligible for the playup belt in 1998-99 - that was their first season at the DI level. North Dakota didn't lose to anybody who was eligible for the playup belt from 3/20/99 to 11/12/99, so these can all just be deleted.

Code:
< 12/17/2005 Michigan Tech
---
> 12/02/2005 Minnesota Duluth
> 12/09/2005 Colorado College
> 12/10/2005 Minnesota Duluth
> 01/13/2006 Michigan Tech
Mankato lost to UMD on 12/2 before they lost to Tech on 12/17.

In the chaos in October 2008, I got this for belt 1 (St. Cloud's):
Code:
10/10/2008 St. Cloud defeated Mercyhurst
10/24/2008 Bemidji State
10/25/2008 St. Cloud
11/01/2008 Minnesota Duluth

and for belt 2 (Minnesota Duluth's):
Code:
10/10/2008 Minnesota Duluth ties Lake Superior. Minnesota Duluth wins the shootout
10/11/2008 (merges with Belt 4)
10/24/2008 Alaska Anchorage
10/31/2008 Michigan Tech
11/01/2008 Alaska Anchorage
11/07/2008 Minnesota State
11/14/2008 (merges with Belt 3)

Everything looks good from that point on.

Awesome.

Right you are.
Denver was not eligible for the playup belt in 1998-99 - that was their first season at the DI level. North Dakota didn't lose to anybody who was eligible for the playup belt from 3/20/99 to 11/12/99, so these can all just be deleted.
I tried to give Denver the Playup Belt many times after they moved back up to DI status, this was just one of the times that I didn't catch myself.
Mankato lost to UMD on 12/2 before they lost to Tech on 12/17.
Good catch.

With regards to the October 2008 madness, I found all your corrections to be correct, so I'll repost it with the correct transfers:
Code:

Any comment on Feb 22 or 23, 1952? North Dakota lists their games against Colorado College as 2/23 and 2/24 (Sat and Sun) which might make sense since they played Minnesota the previous weekend and Denver during the week, while CC lists the games as 2/22 and 2/23 (Fri and Sat), which I think is more likely.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

I went further back with the New York Belt, too.

If we assume that one of the five major NY programs (Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, Rensselaer, or St. Lawrence) held the NY Belt at the conclusion of the 1963-4 season (which is highly unlikely because it probably got lost along the way with Columbia or some other long extinct program, but if it did, it rested in either the hands of SLU or RPI), then we can trace the belt in the following manner:

Give each of Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell, Rensselaer, and St. Lawrence a NY Belt heading into the 1964-5 season and see what happens. (I did not give Army a Belt. I probably should have, but they rarely played any of the major programs and most seasons would have passed with them just defending it against Hamilton, a highly boring belt to track.)

Clarkson:
Code:
Assume Clarkson finishes 1963-4 season with NY Belt
12/05/1964 (merges with Rensselaer Belt)
12/08/1964 (merges with Cornell Belt)
12/11/1964 Colgate / merges with Colgate Belt

Colgate:
Code:
Assume Colgate finishes 1963-4 season with NY Belt
12/11/1964 (merges with Clarkson Belt)

Cornell:
Code:
Assume Cornell finishes 1963-4 season with NY Belt
12/05/1964 (merges with St. Lawrence Belt) (may be 12/04/1964)
12/08/1964 Clarkson / merges with Clarkson Belt

Rensselaer:
Code:
Assume Rensselaear finishes 1963-4 season with NY Belt
12/05/1964 Clarkson / merges with Clarkson Belt

St. Lawrence:
Code:
Assume St. Lawrence finishes 1963-4 season with NY Belt
12/05/1964 Cornell / merges with Cornell Belt (may be 12/04/1964)

What's the moral of the story? Colgate gets the belt on Dec 11, 1964 and we continue to track it from there.

Before I continue to post the rest of the belt, I just want to make sure of a couple things.
1) Concordia isn't in NY / isn't eligible for the Belt because they weren't playing D-I in ~1979-1983, right? Clarkson and Concordia played pretty often, which makes me think that they were semi-local, but I couldn't find a Concordia in New York and I don't know of a Concordia that played D-I (aka they're not listed in augenblick).

2) Oswego State was not playing a D-I schedule in 1980-1981.

If both of those are correct statements, then the NY Belt should go on the following path. Note that I have not triple-checked this, but I'm mildly confident about its path.

Code:
12/11/1964 Colgate (Colgate Belt merges with Clarkson Belt)
12/29/1964 Rensselaer
01/06/1965 Cornell
12/07/1965 Clarkson

If Cornell and St. Lawrence tied, then the belt goes along the following path:

01/06/1996 St. Lawrence

03/08/1997 Rensselaer
03/14/1997 Cornell

The differences from the previously established NY Belt (other than the asterisk):
Code:

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

Before I continue to post the rest of the belt, I just want to make sure of a couple things.
1) Concordia isn't in NY / isn't eligible for the Belt because they weren't playing D-I in ~1979-1983, right? Clarkson and Concordia played pretty often, which makes me think that they were semi-local, but I couldn't find a Concordia in New York and I don't know of a Concordia that played D-I (aka they're not listed in augenblick).

2) Oswego State was not playing a D-I schedule in 1980-1981.
Concordia is in Canada. It was formed by a merger of Sir George Williams and Loyola of Montreal.

Oswego was never D-I.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

I extended the NY Belt history back to Colgate in 1964 and made the two changes that you wrote at the end.

The IcHN says that on 3/2/96 Cornell beat SLU 5-4. There are also discussions about the game from both team's vantage points, both saying that SLU came back from down 4-2 in the second to win 5-4. So I'll omit the *.

I'm too lazy to look it up - who has the belt to start this season?

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

The IcHN doesn't give dates but an article states " "At the Wisconsin site, Minnesota edged the host Badgers in first night action while the next night league champ Michigan Tech, a real front-runner all season, was stunned by upstart North Dakote, 6-4." I think that means 3/12 since elsewhere the tourney dates were 3/11-13.

Can you check the Denver site? If they played across the same three days, I think there's a mistake in the main belt, which went through the Denver site in the 1971 WCHA tournament:

Code:
03/06/1971 Michigan State
03/11/1971 Minnesota-Duluth
03/12/1971 Denver

I think that should be 3/12 and 3/13 and that the games went:
3/11 Denver-CC
3/12 MSU-UMD
3/13 Denver-UMD

Both Denver and MSU claim to have played UMD on 3/12 so one of them must be wrong.

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

They could have played the same day as the article isn't explicit. "Meanwhile, back at the other WCHA playoff in Denver, the host Pioneers continued their dominance of Colorado College with a 6-3 triumph while MinnDuluth stopped Micigan [sic] State in overtime, 4-3. The matchup between the two winners here produced a 9-3 Denver victory over Duluth."

Rats.

I found this article: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=clJRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KDANAAAAIBAJ&pg=5136,2968064

It says Denver beat UMD on Saturday, which would be 3/13. But it doesn't mention the other game at all.

The media guides all agree on 3/11 for CC-Denver and 3/12 for MSU-UMD.

Too bad the original thread is gone, I'm curious how this was resolved originally.

I have changed it in my file and on post 3 of this thread.

I have no recollection about what happened on the original thread here but probably someone just made an error. At that time there were a lot fewer media guides available or people who would check them. At least it is just an error of a day, we didn't follow The Belt on an incorrect path for two years. :)

Hockey East has released BC's schedule. It can be confirmed that BC's first game of the season will be against Northeastern on October 13th.

Given that you keep track of the belts anyway (Thanks so much for that, by the way), I don't see the point of not posting any given belt. It takes an extra half second of scrolling to get past the belts you don't care about. The only reason I could imagine would be if there were seasons where a belt wouldn't be contested at all, meaning you could just leave it out (at least until the NCAAs start). Whether or not the CHA belt gets actively updated sets a precedent for whether the CCHA belt will be posted after next year.

Some people have said that more Belts dilutes their significance, like everyone making the playoffs. (That is, assuming there is any significance in the first place. :) )

What is this, western-biased people?

Perhaps, as a compromise, just post it once every page or so (20 posts).
