The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Proud of our team tonight, just wish it'd gone the other way. This team can do damage in March. They gave BC too much space but I mean it's either that or be burned outside. Just hope they realize they are a really good squad and can make a run in the HE Tournament.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

NU's SHG was a top 10 play on SportsCenter. Jimmy's goal was #1. The announcers kept pumping the event.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Congrats to BC - the best team in the tourney won.

Congrats to NU for fighting to the bitter end and capitalizing on the mistakes. Who won the eberly? I suspect it will be one of the worst save percentages ever to win.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

What can you say? Great tournament everybody...

Harvard got a well deserved win for outplaying BU
BU took BC to the edge the first Monday
NU took the best team in the country (are we sure BC is actually a college hockey team?) to the brink tonight
BC faced two tough opponents in a tournament that consistently brings out the best in them and beat both in OT, proving they're in a class of their own this year

I don't care what some some fans with insecurities about their team's records say, this is a heck of a tournament. When you get down to it it's pretty clear on these two Mondays how much the players, coaches, and fans (yes, fanboys and superfrauds alike) care about it. Feb 6 and 13, 2012... we reconvene then.

Huge congrats to BC... Hockey East and the Nation up next?

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Odd of NESN to replay last years HE Final tonight but superimpose NU jerseys over Maine's...

Well said. Just look at how hard it was for BC to win the Beanpot in 2008 and this year. All four wins came in OT. Then look at their blowout wins at the FF in 2008 and 2010. While the Beanpot still needs NU and Harvard to win one, it is still very difficult to win.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

All 7 BC goals scored by New Englanders:

Cross - CT
Mullane - CT
Kreider (2) - MA
Hayes - MA
Arnold - MA
Whitney - MA

Shows how much the local kids care about the tournament.

Even better, Jimmy Hayes is one of two players in the final born and raised within the Boston city limits. The other, of course, is Kevin Hayes. Fitting that Jimmy scored the winner.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

I will say this. BC's fans are far more tolerable than BU's. They didn't really give any crap after the game. Actually, pretty much none.

I think it's pretty much agreed that NU and BU hate each other much more than NU and BC do. Not sure if it has to do with the schools being closer to each other or whatever, but I've always thought in a game involving BU and BC, most NU fans would rather BC win. Most BC fans don't feel any real animosity towards NU and that was clear tonight because there was noticeably a lot less energy in the student section than there was last week. I also think most BC fans were relieved that they didn't lose rather than happy that they won, because that game was much too close for comfort. Besides, nobody (especially BC and BU) wants to be known as the team that ended the NU Beanpot drought.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

A lot to like from NU's performance but obviously they didn't get the most important thing; the win. If we had played like that all year, we'd be in a position to make the NCAA's. Congrats to BC, they simply had too much speed and skill for us tonight. What a response after we made it 5-4 with 11 minutes left. I will need to see the replay on the Ferriero slashing call, that really killed us. Although McNeely and Macleod will never win a Beanpot they have given us Husky fans 110% for all four years and I look forward to honoring them on senior night.

P.S. I wish Kreider had left for the Rangers organization last year. :p

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

We had a shot in this game. I'm p! $$ed. We could have won that GD game. Why can't we have nice things?

Someone asked who won the eberly... It was Rawlings with a .919 save percentage. The worst sv. % that I can see for a winng tender is .816 in the 1980 pot (the eberly only goes back to 74 so if someone wants to check out those stats from further back, be my guest. I'm not doing it.)

I just hope this doesn't deflate them going into the next two games against bc this weekend. I know I'm deflated. You can't be brought back up like that with less than 2 mins to go in the game and have our hearts ripped out AGAIN and not be delated. Great game and I hate bc. Congrats. LET US WIN ONE!!!!

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

A few notes from last night...
1) Glad that Chickens@NU will leave the any BC related threads alone for a few days
1a) Wait, you are telling me we play NU again two more times within five days?! crap, guess we will hear more from the world famous prognosticator
2) I think the BC student section was a little bigger than NU's, and on the sieve chants the noise was astounding, but **** there were several moments when the NU student section absolutely erupted. incredibly loud by those guys, especially at the tail end of the third both before and especially after they tied it up. you could tell they poured their hearts and souls into that game.
3) BC gave 110% and NU gave maybe 120%? these teams absolutely left it all on the ice. congratulations to both teams, they definitely played their hearts out. saw some moments where they were getting a little chippy, but after a game like that, I think both teams respect each other. that will make both games this weekend that much better.
4) I thought in general, BC outplayed NU when on 5 on 5, but NU capitalized on almost every single opportunity they got. they had some absolutely great shots off fewer overall opportunities, whereas BC got the same number of goals through regulation off more opportunities. the only exception to this was OT, when BC came out on all cylinders, and NU seemed a little hesitant. not sure why that was; perhaps BC had more stamina or NU had used up all their adrenaline during that comeback in the third, or maybe York said all the right things in the locker room, but that was the only noticeable part of the game where one side really held a firm upper hand. the rest of the game was back and forth all night.
5) despite 15 total goals, I don't think the goalies played awful. other than the first goal that rawlings gave up, I don't think any of the goals were exceptionally weak. both teams seemed lackadaisical on defense, especially bc. on several powerplays, BC let NU guys drift right up to the faceoff dot or into the slot and fire a shot at muse point blank which he had almost no chance at, and samuelsson did an absolutely horrid job of defending NU's breakaway goal (I believe it was their third goal? not sure exactly, but it was the shorty). NU likewise seemed to be getting killed in the corners during most battles for pucks, and both sides had way too many defensive turnovers.
6) what the heck was going on with the NU section at the end, both taking the shirts off and chanting "i believe that we will win"? right at that moment, I turned to my friend and said "they realize they are going into OT against the #1 team in the nation, right? I wouldn't be so cocky right now." sure enough that chant jinxed it.
7) that being said, for the most part, NU fans were far more gracious than BU fans, probably owing to the fact that there isnt the same rivalry between BC and BU as there is between BC and NU. only one small group of fans tried yelling "BC still sucks" as we walked to the parking lot, but we started jumping up and down yelling "I believe that you have lost" at them, and the situation was quickly diffused. Other than that, the husky fans were very gracious, and deserve credit for that. it was a heartbreaking loss for them, especially on valentine's day, but they handled it with enough grace to get out with their heads held high. the NU students definitely represented their school well.
8) finally, had a great view for that last goal, and saw it all develop. have to say, that was one of the most satisfying goals I have watched go in. great job by the eagles in the win. to a certain extent we are "happy we didn't lose" because no one wanted to be the team that let NU snap the streak, but **** was it satisfying to win another beanpot championship. they are gonna have to find a new name for it besides BU invitational.
9) look forward to two more great games this weekend everyone. go BC!
P.S. How the heck did BU lose to Harvard?!

I'm only like that during the beanpot. That is troll season on the boards! :D I may still chime in but I'm not anywhere near Beanpot thread levels at any other time of year.
