The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

oooo arguments about chants, NOW we have a Beanpot thread... please continue!

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

After watching the late game last night, I am left wondering how it seems BU has some Beanpot God looking over them. Examples include a replay that resulted in a "no-goal" when most thought a goal was certain, back to back power plays late in the third, BC stuffed on a breakaway as the penalty expired. As a BC fan, I was shocked to see a power play in overtime in their favor. I sat at the edge of my seat praying to not give up a shorty instead of getting a power play goal.

It's almost like the Red Sox....just waiting to them to blow (or for BU to win) it.

I was thinking that the Beanpot God was looking elsewhere when BU tipped an otherwise wide shot into their own net, when they were stuffed on a breakaway of their own by their leading scorer, and when they took a penalty less than 3 minutes into OT. I sat back in my couch 99.9% certain that the game would soon end in a bad way, not even considering praying, as it would do no good.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

When I started going to the Beanpot, in 1987, the leading storyline year in and year out was not "BU Invitational", but "anyone can win in the 'Pot". And it was true. BU knocked off top-5 ranked opponents in the first round in both 87 and 88, and gave Harvard a serious run at the title in 1989, despite nearly going down 4-0. In 1994, BC was likely the last team anyone thought would win it, and they pulled off the big win.

I'm probably missing a really obvious recent one, but when was the last time the beanpot provided a BIG upset? It seems to me the tourney has lost that element of it's luster.

Wait, which of the goals was going wide? (honest question)

First round upset? Or winning the whole thing upset? I wanna say Harvard coming back from 3-0 and 4-2 down in the '98 Pot to beat BC 5-4 in OT was a pretty big upset, but I honestly can't remember if Harvard was good or not that year. Other than that, it's pretty much been BU "upsetting" BC a few times if you can even call it that.

BTW, now that BC won last night and I know will not be playing Harvard this year...this Harvard team might be the worst team I've seen in my years watching the Pot.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

And the #3 BU women's team falls to Boston College! WHA HAPPAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many goals deflected off BU players? That's all that matters. Also, were there any "heroic" goaltending efforts?

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

It's tough for me to rag on the BC students for any of their chants. This was the first time I can remember the BC students outnumbering the BU students.

The student turnout (and general turnout) over at Conte all year has been a very pleasant surprise. There has to be three times as many students at the home games this year than in years past.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Who is whining? Maybe BU should send their women's team to play the BC men from now on.

not so much... the female ratdogs (emphasis on dogs) just fell to the Lady Eagles compliments of 2 points from Miss Universe.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

I only chant it at BU because it was my safety school.

The one I find obnoxious is the "what's the matter with [school]? [school] sucks!" - seriously? that's all you can come up with?

it definitely is the worst chant ever. but when your student section finally grows beyond a handful of people you cant control all of them. first time in atleast 7 or 8 years we had more people than the fanboys. amazing stuff; i can live with the bad.

and who ever started the 'where's waldo' chant... bless your heart.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Since we're on the topic of the Women's Beanpot, I figured I'd randomly mention that it came to my attention that Phil Kessel has a sister playing at Minnesota. Needless to say I looked her up on the Gopher roster and found a video interview with her. She looks pretty good IMO. I feared she would look like a female version of Phil, but not the case.

We interupt this facebook stalking session for an important announcement. I need all of you to stop what you are doing and listen.

a special congratulations are in order for bu captain, joe pereira. who, by my count, becomes the first terrier to play in two beanpot consolation games since (presumably) someone in 1983. couldn't happen to a better player!

LOL, this made me laugh.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Regarding chants from Monday, I did appreciate BU's "Sunday school" response to BC's safety school chant.

For next Monday, I know BC bought some of NU's tickets which should make for some entertainment if intoxicated freshman from each school are mixed in the same section.

I would imagine that sometime this summer BC's football coach will pull Jerry York aside and ask him what the secret is.
