Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Great effort by your team last night guys. They showed lots of heart coming back over and over again. Assuming, you don't have issues with early departures this offseason, I'd say the future is looking pretty bright again. Good for Maine, good for Hockey East.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

As scary as it sounds, they may be better next year.

Given how many freshmen and sophomores they have, they SHOULD be better next year. Of course the regular caveats about players leaving early applies.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

It's really too bad there isn't some subjectivity to the selection process. Not to sound like sour grapes but Maine would've been a much better selection then VT.

Well some subjectivity would certainly be needed as your opinion and not the numbers say ME would have been a better selection.

ME was 3-3-1 OOC while VT was 6-1.

Seems to me VT is the better selection playing OOC teams. Especially when you consider the 7 wins against teams in the field compared to ME's 4.

But kudos to the UME team for a heck of a season and a great game last night against the Eagles. Great season, and by the looks more to come.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

I've been watching Maine hockey for 30 years (ugh) and losing games has always been heartbreaking. But last night as much as I wanted Maine to win, I did not leave the Garden disappointed.

What an effort, what heart, what determination! That was Maine Hockey! It obviously would be so much more fun to have won, to be going back to the NCAA's, but it also could have ended last weekend with a 2nd loss to Lowell.

Those of you who know my reputation on this board know that I have been a supporter of Coach Whitehead (don't know the man) and I want to congratulate the coaches as well as the team for the way they battled through adversity, and for how prepared they were for BU. As for last night I can not recall ever watching a game where a team responded time after time like Maine did. Scoring 3x's less than a minute after BC had scored! Scoring with :30 to go!

Expectations will be different next year and that brings new challenges for the team and coaches. Goaltending is an obvious concern, but with the emergence of Diamond along with the likes of House, Flynn, Dee, Abbott, Mangene, Shemansky and hopefully Gustav along with a very strong group of D-man Maine should be back in the Garden and back in the tournament.

As far as I'm concerned some unfinished business in St. Paul awaits!!!!!

Golf clubs are back in the trunk, but thank you Maine Hockey for a much better winter and a terrific spring weekend!

On the right side of the page... there's highlights for the BU game on that recap as well.

Thanks man.
On the issue of a goalie recruit, I guess I cant see the big hurry. Why not take a year or even more to go after the guy we really want? Presumeably Darling and Sirman will take care of the next couple of years giving us the time to really find the next Jimmy ;)

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

The Maine coaching staff is actively seeking a goal tender for next year. My concern is that it is awfully late to be seeking talent and/or experience with short notice. Hopefully, they find a good one.

Lots of good goalies available according to Heisenberg's lists and according to various league stats. Some starting goalies with experience that play on very good teams remain.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Bob....Detroit sucks anyway, who in their right mind wants a FF there. St. Paul, now there's a place I'd go back to in a heartbeat....wuzzat that the 91 FF there......great city.

I think the question remains, will Darling be back?.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

As far as the team goes....truely exceeded my expectations. Showed a ton of heart and guts over the last two weeks. Willy didn't have his A game last night but in no way do I put the L on him. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have even been there. BC is a very fast and talented team. They are relentless on the forecheck and their PK is excellent.

I want to thank this team for restoring the pride and fun to Maine hockey. Its been a while since myself...or any of us have been this excited and looked at the future of the program with such optimism and confidence. I really think this team could've won a couple in the NCAA's. But like Wally said hopefully there is a real bad taste that lasts until October.

Pretty much the same thing I said on the BDN comments.

I wish the seniors the best and a thank you for bringing the pride back into Maine hockey.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

They didn't even have to do that. One win against Union and they would have been 11 in the PWR and in.

And this is what makes it kind of difficult for me to feel good about pushing BC to the brink in a thrilling game. Season shouldn't be over. Echo the idea that these guys should be bitter about it all summer and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Unless all the "issues" are resolved, do we want him back?

If this was a matter of just breaking a team rule, he would have been back already.

My guess, and its only that, is that he'll get his chit together and make the substantial contribution he promised he would. Think he needs to prove to the Coyotes(?) that he's worthy of their pick. Course thats the optimist in me speaking. I also think Gustav will return....he hasnt gotten us into the dance yet and hes a competitive guy and I'll guess he wants that more than anything....pretty tight group...no one bales. I hope the same work ethic they applied last summer is ratcheted up a notch this summer. Their destiny is in their own hands now....they know how good they can be when they apply themselves....no more Unions. Though in hindsight, its easier to see why they struggled that weekend.

Man, my hands are sore from pounding on the glass yesterday. Disappointed, but exciting game. Watching the replay on NESN now, it's going on my DVR.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Do you honestly think Nyquist will return for another year? We are watching the replay of last night's Detroit/Vancouver game. The NHL network posted a factoid which shows that the Red Wings have five key players over 31. Wouldn't they love to have a Hobey Baker finalist (possibly a winner) who isn't eligible for AARP?

Yes, I do. For one thing, hes not strong enough yet. They'd pound him into playing shy out there....detroit knows that....does no one any good. He needs 5 to 10 more pounds of muscle.....he needs to get into the ncaa's and prove himself under pressure.....maybe i'm wrong but I dont think detroit is an organization that rushes its prospects, especially if undersized....look how long they developed Howard. Nyquist has one more big step to take in college and thats at least getting to the final four....he hasnt been there yet....if he were a large body its different but he needs to learn very well the art of protecting and shielding himself in order to be able to handle pro rigors
and to be able to work his magic.

Detroit lacks offense without a doubt. At this point and time can Gus work his magic against bigger and stronger players?. The only question is, can he get better at UMaine. If you think no, then he's gone, if you think yes, then its quite possible he stays

You're spot on. I'm a huge red wings fan and I see nyquist as someone who is at least two or three years away from having any kind of impact with them. One thing that people should note is the success of Moore, Purcell, Leveille, and Sweetland in the pros since they have left. I don't really see it making any sense for the wings to sign him and I don't think they will.

what are the options for his contract?

Rookie minimum if he does not sign a 2 way deal?
so that would be about 3/4 of a million dollars?

or 2 way deal which would land him just under $100,000 a year, I am guessing.

who was the last great Black Bear with NHL potential who stuck around? Moore, I guess... But I think it was his senior season that showed that he had the potential... so he did not really "stick around".

that said,

Maine was 12-11-2 against the top 25 teams this past season.

Maine was 7-6-1 against the bottom 27.
