Figures that UVM sneaks in. The PWR and selection process is a frusterating one. It is what it is I guess. Maine, with pretty much identical record and two wins and a tie against, is left out. Very tough to digest, eh!

Vermont beat better non conference teams. If we had won one game against Union back in October, this would be a very different story. Vermont has wins against Denver, Yale, and Minnesota Duluth. Not to mention two wins against UNH in the quarters. They earned their trip.

Whether we like the rules or not, every team knows them up front, which is one thing that is great about college hockey.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

It's really too bad there isn't some subjectivity to the selection process. Not to sound like sour grapes but Maine would've been a much better selection then VT. No disrespect to VT, but to compair the two teams and how each is playing, esp witht the head to head compairison..........just sayin.:(

Hear ya. The Maine team we saw play this weekend would be a great team for the NCAA's. But, UVM has the out of conference record which is key. If we had beat Union, even once....or not been swept by UMass...or...oh well...

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Unless all the "issues" are resolved, do we want him back?

If this was a matter of just breaking a team rule, he would have been back already.

And if we want him back is key question. What is the line between being an asset or a liability? He was suspended on short notice for the Union series at the start of the season. And it is these same Union games that have been weighing us down in the Pairwise all season long.

Whatever his "issues" are, I hope they are resolved, and I say that for his own personal benefit. In terms of being back on the team, we all have to trust the coaching staff. One thing is for certain, it will be hard for the program to move forward until this is resolved, one way or the other.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

They didn't even have to do that. One win against Union and they would have been 11 in the PWR and in.

that makes me want to throw up. I think we saw this team had the potential to put up a good fight in the NCAAs, but they didn't take care of business during the regular season. I'm happy with the way they went down fighting, I've seen too many seasons end where it looks like they weren't giving it all they had. I just wish we had a few more games to go...

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

the darling situation is a tough one... he certainly has talent, but he also let his team down in a major-league way this season... if the rumors circulating are indeed true, and he is in fact dealing with a serious problem with alcohol (as opposed to making a couple of bad decisions), then the argument can be made that if he does the right things regarding getting help, then i have no problem with him working/earning his way back onto the ice... but only after he has gotten his life/health sorted out... if it is a serious alcohol problem, i am not sure many of us on this board would have had the wherewithal to recognize it, and many would not had the strength to admit it... college is easily one of the most difficult places to recognize a problem with alcohol, because when you look around, you see plenty of peers ripping it up and partying like rock stars...

obviously, darling is entitled to his privacy, but i'd like to know what the team rule is regarding drinking in season... i played soccer and college and our coach's rule was no drinking for the two days preceding a match... between that and classroom responsibilities, it did a pretty good job of limiting the amount of partying during the season...

I hope things can get straightened out and I hope that Tim Whitehead, Scott's father away from home, can do everything possible to HELP and not to simply deal out punishment.

It was not that long ago that Maine had a very talented player ( a real game changer) who had a serious drinking problem. The coaches and a couple players took him under their wings and they made the kid into a real winner, All American and NHLer.
At the time, we "fans" were not online and posting all of our opinions, and I have to think that helped him by not hurting him.

maybe I, an "insane person" can plead successfully that we keep our negativity on the matter to ourselves and help Scott out as best as we can.

how many times did walrus say that Maine would be hoping to have that loss at PC back?

Make that loss a win, and Maine is the last team out.

But Ferris would be in instead of Vermont...

I really hope that he sees what his actions may have cost this team, and grows up a little bit because of it. He has a lot of talent, but needs to learn, big-time, from the fallout of recent weeks. We fans will have "what-if's" to discuss for a long time to come, but what really matters the most is that this young man gets his life straightened around. He could really be a difference-maker if he can do that.

and then Maine would not have played UML in the playoffs....maybe they would not have had the loss in the quarter finals, or maybe the would have been swept by Merrimack

maybe maybe... it is impossible to look back

good point. i think the UML matchup was favorable for us - we had confidence against them stemming from an early season victory when they were third in the country, not to mention flynn's outburst a couple weekends earlier, whereas we may have underestimated a very capable Mack squad, or been intimidated by the BU team that dominated us in the two game set at Agganis.

all in all, the players knew what they had to do in the position they put themselves in, and they ultimately did not accomplish what they wanted to. we can all agree the cards fell the way they fell, and we were one goal away from playing hockey next weekend.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

I hate that the season is over. After being in Boston this weekend, it feels bizarre that they won't be playing next weekend. Next year will bring more consistency, and a trip to the tournament. Still so bittersweet... watching that 6th goal, and then us in the crowd going bananas, doesn't get old. Just close the window after that.

On another note, here's a nice article on Mike Lundin.

Great effort on Saturday night. Congratulations on a great run.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Wasn't John Muse a last minute recruit for BC when Corey Schneider left early?

Maybe and while he is ok, He plays behind great teams, teams that are more talented than anything Maine has had since?? I think he might have been a recruit who came in early?

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

I'm not worried about Scott's return.

In fact, I bet he'll be on top of the conference.

There have been nights thusfar that he looks absolutely, positively unstoppable. There have been other nights he's looked thoroughly distracted. If he's really struggling with substances...well that can take a toll on your focus. With the local media attention surrounding it, he really has no choice but to clean up his act and focus on hockey without undergoing social scruntiny...and hey, maybe this is a huge turning point for his career?!

Guys....I know its been implied here or there....but I think we have a real shot at making some noise next year.

I think Darling will be back with a vengence. A battle tested, senior defense. 3 Lines of legit scoring...with guys like Diamond, Abbott, and Dee apt to explode into top-line caliber college scorers by next year on lines 2 and 3. The tenacity of Mangene and Shemansky keeping everyones head in the game. And I not only expect #89 to be back for one more, I expect him to carry a freshly embroided "A" near the shoulder of his jersey.

And as badly as it SUCKS to lose that game Saturday....part of me says it might be good in the long run....because you know that game will GNAW in the pit of their stomachs all year, and they do NOT plan on feeling like that again!

I really think the equation looks right :)
