OK, game on.

House okays short-term suspension of debt limit to April, requires both House and Senate to pass a budget by then or Members' pay is suspended.

Automatic cuts under sequester start March 1 unless a budget is passed before then. Who will cry "uncle" first? the military lobby or the pork lobbies?

I'm betting on pork belly futures

SecDef Panetta has announced plans to end all remaining restrictions on women in combat. This is not much of a surprise, given that it's the track DOD has been on for years. These days ground combat is generally the province of elite units: Marines, Airborne, Rangers, etc. Assuming the plan is to integrate women into these units, despite some personal misgivings, any young woman who can meet the requirments should be permitted to join. I predict, however, a long series of skirmishes where the requirements are dismissed as "sexist" or "unnecessary", and "designed to keep women out of those units." What we may wind up with is civilian juries or other politically motivated types, deciding what should and shouldn't be required of potential members of those units. Thus watering down those standards. The impact, if any, on the combat effectiveness of those units might not be immediately obvious--until the caskets are unloaded at Dover.

And the ladies should also be prepared for unbelievably primitive, humiliating conditions.

Canada, Germany, and Australia have ended all front line combat restrictions on women, so there should at least be some data out there. Canada's restriction ended over 20 years ago. I don't believe the physical requirements were changed and I wonder how many, if any, females have made the Canadian special forces.

The Canadian military is very secretive about its SpecFor units, especially JTF-2; however, I would hazard a guess that there are few, if any females in the units.

In fact, a small percentage of female members serve in active combat units:

In 1998 the Canadian Forces embarked on a series of initiatives aimed at recruiting more women into the combat trades. While the number of women joining these trades has risen gradually for almost two decades, attrition remains an issue, with significantly higher rates of women leaving their military careers than men. Military culture remains a barrier, and today, only two percent (about 250 out of 14,000) of soldiers in the combat trades are women.

CBC has a timeline of first for female members here.

Doesn't Israel do the same thing? Anyway, I'm sure the goal isn't to achieve 50/50 parity in combat units but just to give women the option. Personally I think the armed services should now start recruiting women from colleges like Northeastern U. The chicks on that campus are bigger than most army recruits, therefore I'm sure they'd be able to hold their own. ;)

You could have had it with the numerous equal rights amendments... Funny that women suddenly opposed it once they figured out it meant they had to register for SSS...

You have an odd take on females. Why do I feel that you find Phyllis Schlafy to be attractive?

Do keep in mind that the US Constitution and form of government was of a radical leftist nature. Its detractors on the right prefered rule by king...by one George or the other.

Sometimes it takes time to understand who's policy in the present is best and who's is not (although not too long in the case of one Mr. W).

J'Accuse everyone in Washington DC who purports to be an elected representative of their District / State.

It also doesn't take too long in the cases of Mr. Executive Order Roosevelt and Mr. Executive Order Obama. One of the first federalists was actually John Adams. He wanted the President to have a life term and to be given a majestic title. The final episode of Hit Man actually had a really interesting factual bit about the White House and Vice Presidents.

Of course, given what both of us have typed, I think we can now agree that there isn't much of a fundamental difference between the Democans and the Republicrats.

You're right, there should be some useful data. On the other hand, I think comparisons as between the United States military and other nations are of limited utility. Rather like an NHL franchise looking to the Charlestown Chiefs for operational tips.

Meanwhile out little buddies, the NORKS are threatening the US with their pending nuclear test. Perhaps someone should ask Hillary "what difference it makes."

Do any of you knuckledraggers have a mind of your own or do you all just follow the daily talking points you hear on cable or talk radio?

As Hillary said when she was wiping the floor with your hero Ron Johnson, what matters is 4 people died, not trying to place phone calls the next day to find out what happened (gee, if only it were that simple). We'll find out what happened and get to the bottom of it. Ask the #2 AQ guy in Yemen about that...oh, you can't, he just ate a drone. In the meantime Opie, please try to use your few remaining brain cells to think independently, okay? You're starting to sound like Old Man McCain!

Always attack. Always argue tu quoque and ad hominem. Always change the subject.

Never mind the serial lying. Shouldn't the person in "charge" of the State Department have some idea of what went on? Because that knowledge might, emphasize might, inform her response so as to reduce the probability of a repetition? Those partisan blinkers you wear are evidently cutting off the blood supply to your brain.

An American ambassador and three other diplomats are dead. So far, nobody in His Imperial Majesty Barack I's government has been sacked. Which raises the question, just how many bodies have to pile up before somebody, anybody gets the gate?
