The 2nd Term - Round 1 - Diving for Dollars

Re: The 2nd Term - Round 1 - Diving for Dollars

Can you tell me in which bill before Congress this mythical high speed rail from Nowhere, CA to East Bumphuck, NV was proposed? Or what cabinet secretary announced it was happening? The only thing I can find is a 2009 statement by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the California high speed rail would connect Los Angeles and Las Vegas and speculation last summer that private investors were looking to build a high speed line from San Francisco to Las Vegas. The only place I see this other train mentioned is in the conspiracy blogosphere alongside such stories as the moon landings being faked and Jimmy Hoffa cruising around Lake Erie on a speedboat.

The Ray LaHood statement is the point of reference, and obviously in order to fund it, it would require money from a substantial government investment (I believe the DC suits like to use the word "subsidy"). Now, fast forward to the planning stages. What about the NIMBY groups that have rejected the railways entering the city limits, and therefore the only thing that could be done is to place the termini in "Nowhere" and "East Bumphuck"?

Don't get me started on how the government is wasting their money creating bad investments on products that nobody is buying (i.e. Solyndra and just about every other bankrupt solar company that received substantial government investment).

Funny, I can do the same thing with Federal Express.

For 5x the cost, sure. Oh, and they still use the post office to deliver the final mile for many rural routes.

Besides, the post office is one of the few things explicitly mentioned in the constitution.

I would like to ask you, then... What, in your belief, are the fundamental differences between a government and a business?

A business is created to satisfy the owner's wishes and desires (generally speaking, to make money). A government exists to guarantee the rights and welfare of its citizens.

Wouldn't privileges and welfare of citizens be the owner's (in this case, the leader of the government) wish and desire?

A right is more than a desire or even a privilege. Welfare is more than a wish. If I thought they were synonymous, I wouldn't have used the words I chose.

So why do you think the two are the same? I'd love to hear how you think a functioning justice system is the same as your local convenience store.

can you tell me where you get your psychedelics from? it sounds like they are top-notch hallucinogens.

I never said what you cite me as saying; in fact, I rarely do. You consistently distort everything through some weird prism in which everything is about scoring political points.

I have no affiliation with either party; I am merely very much afraid of the current crop of progressives and their anti-democratic insistence that they know better than anyone else and that gives them the obligation to impose their views on everyone with however much force they deem is necessary. they are in their own way just as zealous and fanatical as any religious crusader I've ever seen. They will protect us from ourselves, and the more we protest, the more that emboldens them to become even more totalitarian.

I merely said "how is this a 'win' for the Democrats?" I never said it was a "win" for the Republicans.

You seem to treat this all like some big game. Have you no conception of the difference between real life and Madden 2013?

Fishy as I most likely pay more in taxes than 90% of the people posting on this message board I can assure you I'm well aware of the consequences. Unlike yourself however, i don't live in a dreamworld where we can keep reducing tax rates and it will magically pay for itself. You deluding yourself over that is harmless. When one of the two political parties competing for power believes that, its a problem. Hence my constant ridicule of today's GOP. That is exactly what Mittens platform was, and he didn't even try to explain how he'd pay for it. When the GOP drops this discredited logic, which they've slavishly obeyed for the last 30+ years, I'll stop making fun of them....maybe. ;)

Regarding what to do with soldiers when reducing the military, there is a shortage of police, fire, and EMT personnel in the country not to mention medical staff. Put some of the defense budget towards funding these positions and the govt at least in the same place, and maybe even better off with the reduction in crime, improved first responder ability, more money being spent in local communities, etc.

I grew up on a rural route. No, they didn't.

Each offers a product or service the customer desires, does it not? At this point, you are trying to argue your personal desirability of specific products or services by using different words to describe essentially the same thing. I'm not here to argue that. If you desire one thing over another, that's your choice, and I'm going to respect that. However, your level of personal desirability is not a fundamental of the workings of these organisations.

So guaranteeing freedoms is no different than selling a hot dog in any aspect whatsoever. That really does explain your worldview more succinctly than anything else written on this board.

I don't think "logic" is the right word for it. I call it faith-based economics. The tax fairy is in the same class as the confidence fairy (or austerity fairy, if you prefer). They're cute concepts that conform to the morals and/or daydreams of the people that adhere to them, but they've been shown to have no basis in reality.

Re: The 2nd Term - Round 1 - Diving for Dollars

Oh that's right I forgot. No one in the Kennedy family has served in public office or held an actual job. My mistake.

I'm sorry if I misrepresented your opinion. I honestly thought, when you were talking about having a "lucky birth" and "winning life's lottery" etc. (or similar words) I thought you meant they didn't "earn" their money. If you meant something else, as indicated by your whiny snide tone here, I apologize.:confused::confused:

Re: The 2nd Term - Round 1 - Diving for Dollars

I think what mookie was referring to was when you agreed with him that the Kennedy's didn't "earn" their money, but you did so in a belligerent tone that suggested you didn't at all realize you were both in full agreement. It was kind of bizarre.

mookie doesn't think grandbabies sitting back spending grandpie's interest are earning anything..

much like priceless, when mookie comes home from foxwoods with money he don't claim he 'earned' money at said casino :p

You can't focus on the fundamentals, can you? Only the merchandise? That really does explain your motive more succinctly than anything else written on this thread series.

Yeah, and even when I was a registered Republican with a strong libertarian streak I still understood the difference between commerce and government and said as much on here. You're not making a revelation by pointing it out now.

Are you seriously trying to pull the party line argument on me? You should know by now that, although I may have voted for specific people, I do not hold water for any party whatsoever. If they say or do something stupid, I'll call them out on it.
