Re: The 2016 NCAA Frozen Four

I'm having a debate with myself. BC men are in the Hockey East semifinals on Friday night in Boston and I'm trying to decide if me and Joe should bail on Minnesota vs. Wisconsin to go to it.

We wouldn't have this problem if NESN/NBCSN has just given the BC men the early game like they earned, but they did, so here we are.

I'm sure more of you think we should stay for the Gopher/Badger game, but I'm looking for compelling arguments.

PS if BC loses to Clarkson not only will I almost certainly leave the Whit but I will probably also go climb under a rock and die.

And the first person who says "OH HA HA WELL NOW I REALLY HOPE BC LOSES THEN YUK YUK YUK!!!!!!" loses for being too obvious.

You need to stay because:
1- Women's hockey needs your support more than men's hockey does
2- you have no chance of meeting pokechecker is you don't stay for the MN game
3- you need to be there for UM/UW in order to manifest your desired championship game matchup of BC/Gophers

Re: The 2016 NCAA Frozen Four

Some thoughts and questions on each team starting with the top seed and moving down.

bc - Puck control, speed, skill, depth are things that have been an advantage for bc all year long and as they have been in very few close games this year, they come in relatively untested for an undefeated team. Some of you may disagree with that but isn't Clarkson going to be the first legitimate top 5 team bc has faced this year? The question for bc is how will they respond if someone is able to negate those advantages and take bc out of their "comfort zone" by taking away time and space for what they do best?

Wisconsin - They seem to have the most flexibility of the 4 teams in that they can play different styles and do it very well. It starts in net for them and it builds out from there with outstanding team defense and very good depth on their forward lines. The question for them is are they up to the task of beating the 2 best offenses in back to back games to win the title (assuming bc gets by Clarkson which I think they will).

Minnesota - Putting aside my bias for a moment, they are in an unfamiliar position of being an underdog for the championship. They will most likely have to beat the #2 and #1 teams for the title. Are they capable of doing that? I'm just not sure as I have rarely seen Minnesota this year at their best for a variety of reasons.

Clarkson - They have the most difficult task of the four as they have to play bc first, who will likely run them out of the rink if they don't figure out ways to slow them down. Can they do that? I guess it's possible but I doubt it. If Clarkson gets a near perfect game from their goalie and bc's goalie is off her game then maybe they have a chance. They proved the doubters wrong in 2014 but I don't think Clarkson has as good a team as they had in 2014.

Re: The 2016 NCAA Frozen Four

Why not...my 2 cents. I agree that BC hasn't played this caliber of talent as often as the WCHA teams do, night in, night out, however they do play their rivals, who all have intelligent coaches, at least 4 times, which is its own stressful game situation.....my question is If BC's goalie is up to facing what I consider, more talented scorers continually coming at her....Coyne didn't skate every minute! To get by Clarkson, the offense will have to lead as it has, because I think Clarkson will trap and try the physical game to stay with them....
I have only seen the Gophers last game, and honestly don't know enough about them...they do have some very talented skaters but in their game, I have to go with Wisconsin, solely based on their goalies stat of what is it, 20 of 33 shutouts! That's just silly.....seriously! And then to carry thru on that logic, sorry TTT20, but defense wins championships....so as much as I hate the Badgers, still stinging from our loss to them in the 77 NCAA semi's 🤔, and the fact that I'd love HE to win a title, the Badgers take the title with their goalie MVP.....IMHO

Re: The 2016 NCAA Frozen Four

someone should give you a tape measure & send you over to the Kohl Center

no need to, it is 97 x 200, 3 feet narrower than an Olympic rink
Labahn is 5 feet wider than an NHL rink
kinda strange, maybe a cheesehead can fill us in on how they arrived at these odd numbers

Random thoughts from me.

The wider rink is not doing Clarkson any favors but I don't think BC will run Clarkson out of the rink. Matt Desrosiers and his staff will have this team ready to play. I think he is as good as any coach in the country. Last year in the QF it was a 3-1 game with about 6 min to go before BC got the insurance goal and an ENG. Key for Clarkson is trying to contain Carpenter and Skrupa (2G/1A and 1G/2A in last years game). Pozzbone/Ambrose and Fast/Harmon are probably gonna see the bulk of play in the defensive end against the top 3 lines of BC. I think Fast is as quick as anyone on BC. Both of these defensive pairs take good care of the puck, can skate the puck out and block a ton of shots. Scoring wise Clarkson has had trouble scoring against good defensive teams with a great goalie (i.e. Quinnipiac). I also believe that Tiley will have to play a near perfect game in the nets. They don't have anywhere near the scoring capability of the 2014 team but I think the 3 freshman forwards in this class (Gabel, Mariani and McGill) give them much more scoring capability vs last years team. Someone out of Mercer, Howe, Bannon and MacAulay have to get a couple of goals and Clarkson needs to take advantage of their power play opportunities. If Clarkson can hold BC to 3 goals or less they have a chance. If not it's been a great year. My pick thru my Green and Gold glasses: Clarkson 4 BC 3. :D or removing my glasses it could be BC 3 Clarkson 1 :( .

Maybe they used a finish tape measure. :D
(rinks in Finland have odd sizes as well, compared to the two standards, NHL and Olympic)

When they built the KC, the trend in the WCHA was to have Olympic sized rinks so they built it as wide as they could. I thought they were going to build LB as wide as the KC so the men could practice on a rink the same width as they play since they cannot always practice at the KC. I never knew the width of LB until now and I am just as confused as anyone. Eaves still complains about when the lads have to play on an NHL width rink, so LB doesn't seem to be an asset for the men in either regard width.

Re: The 2016 NCAA Frozen Four

With all this talk about the ice surface, I've got to wonder why the NC$$ lets the championships be held in a rink with different dimensions than most of the teams play on all year. It's like playing the Super Bowl on a Canadian football field. They made 200x85 a requirement for the men, why not the women?

And full disclosure, I actually supported the ECAC men going back to Lake Placid ... but only because the other options sucked.

Re: The 2016 NCAA Frozen Four

Probably because as we have all said before, and as even the US Women's National Soccer team learned, when FIFA scheduled their games on turf and not grass, these are trivial issues that don't warrant concern when dealing with the women's game, no matter the sport!
