The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

btw, that was just an incredible game and a great atmosphere. Obviously my perspective is lit by the fact that my team won. But I like to think I've seen enough games as a neutral to know what a great game is - and that was just incredibly competitive and entertaining. The crowd was rocking, both teams had great fan turnout, and it was just an incredible night.

I understand NU fans being dejected and I feel bad about that... that was another heartbreaker. They deserve to win one of these eventually. But anyone else whining after a night like that that there's something wrong with the Beanpot and they ought to change the format or invite Maine or play it in Worcester or whatever must either be a sad BU fan or didn't watch the game.

Obviously, the event would have more luster to neutrals if all four teams were winning in a balanced way. But that's very rarely ever happened throughout the event's history. There have always been dynasties but the tradition has persisted. Also, it clearly doesn't appear that NU needs to win a Beanpot to have incredible interest from their students and alumni in attending. If anything, the "this is the year" game drums up interest. The real problem, attendance-wise, is Harvard... and they have no interest in their program at all, Beanpot or no Beanpot, and it's because they're terrible, not because they never win the Beanpot. I bet if they were routinely making NCAA tournaments, they would get better crowds there, even if they end up having a 25+ year drought too. You can't sell "this is the year" to Harvard fans because there's no hope of them being remotely competitive even in a one-off game against Northeastern or BC. (BU, obviously, is a different story.)

Consolation game can have implications for the PWR so it should not be eliminated... .
.

true, not to mention the fact that the teams cant have an "if " game on their schedule. When drawing up schedules they need to know they are playing that game, cant be open ended

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Wait they're not printing Back 2 Back 2 Back 2 Back Consolation Game Champs shirts in Cambridge?

Anyone who thinks the tournament needs to change wasn't there last night, great environment, great game. Would it be better if Harvard people cared? Sure

The campus idea would never work, way too short of notice for some of the arenas.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

What a crock of crap! What the hell game were you watching anyway? Those kids left everything they had on the ice. You couldn't possibly ask for more and they certainly weren't "the enemy." ..

I never called the kids the 'enemy'.. just everything overall with NU & the 'Pot.. when you don't win it in 25+ yrs.. the enemy is the nuances, the elements, the lone Harvard bugle fan.. the internet.. :) its something.. this is NU & the Beanpot. Until we do not end the drought.. the enemy is us. Like last night.. say the NU player crashes in a second later into that net.. its a good first goal.. who knows how this turns out. But we are NU & this is the Beanpot & our deal with the devil has been so for a quarter plus century now!. So know how that goes.. that was & is my gist. I was very happy & impressed with the team's effort & have said so as much. No question there. Was a very good gm!

BTW, this isn't the end of the season.

..thank god for that & I hope we get a chance to come back to the Garden with Witt & co..

Enemy is us? C'mon. Have another drink!

Yup. Anyway, I did. Hope you did, as well. Cheers, relax. We have a decent team. :)

The problem with them is their AD, not just the HC. He just doesn't care enough to bother. I heard he is like a GDF clone.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

He's a control freak like GDF and replacing people with his own. My sister told me he (Scalise) replaced one of the coaches by sending her an email instead of a face-to-face meeting. It's kind of like what GDF did to Inglese the women basketball coach. The stories on GDF are well circulated within BC.

I ran into a coach's secretary at BC and she verified what GDF did. Can you mention firing someone because he didn't go along with the staff change he tried to implement ?

It was great to hear both student sections last night. They came through loud and clear. Funny stuff.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

I was at the game. The Northeastern student section is one of the best in the country (at least at the Beanpot; I've never seen them at Matthews). They really impress me. BC fans are as loud, but more infrequent with chants and definitely a little less clever. I also thought there were more BC kids at the opening round game last week.

To anyone who wants to change the Beanpot: over my dead body! And I'm not even a fan of any of the four teams.

The NU crowd wasn't limited to the Garden. About 100 watching in WashDC and another 20 or so in Baltimore. Even more in other parts of the country. Same electric atmosphere.

Now back to my cup of hemlock.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Given the vast amount of heartbreak BU and BC have caused my alma mater over the years, I should really hate this tournament. But there's always one or two fantastic hockey games a year. If the only problem is Harvard's apathy, I think we can over look that...

Are people only now realizing that NU fans are hilarious? I that that was common knowledge.

I was almost crying I laughed so hard during the "bukakke" chant. Teamwork, indeed! :) (Disclaimer: If you don't know what that is, DO NOT Google it at work.)

"We've got jobs" (in reference to the co-op program) was pretty good, as well.

Also, the attendance at the consolation game.

Which is kind of like the Olympics worrying about TV ratings for kayaking.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Totally. Also, The Game is really uncompetitive these days with Yale football having lost 6 in a row to Harvard. Wouldn't it be more fun to replace Yale in The Game with, like, UConn, just once? Or maybe Army, if we want to keep with old-timey football programs that were around when Harvard started.

That's how traditions work, right?

Did you even read the last three words of my post? Leave it alone, means leave the event as it is.

I think it's the early game in general that's an issue. Someone with more free time than me should look up whether or not a BU/BC semifinal game has ever been the 5 PM game.

The answer is No. But, as I was doing the research, something even more interesting (IMHO) appeared. I Googled this (so I assume it's correct), and along with game results the attendance for EACH night was listed. For EVERY year from 1995-96 (the year the Fleet Center opened) until this year, the first night's attendance was listed at 17,565. In 2014, the first night's attendance was listed at 14,776. That is a drop of nearly 3,000. Could this start a whole new round of speculation as to why that would be the case? Is it the "Harvard phenonmenon," as has been alluded to on this thread?? :)

The crowd shots after NU tied it at 1 were priceless. Great showing by the Huskie fan-base.

That's a staple for every game, first powerplay starts with "Gimme a B!" Everyone in the DogHouse gets into it, lots of fun. "We've got jobs" was my favorite one of the night though, and I wasn't alone in that opinion either. Whoever started that one deserves applause.

What was the chant for the second power play? Couldn't figure it out.
