Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm
btw, that was just an incredible game and a great atmosphere. Obviously my perspective is lit by the fact that my team won. But I like to think I've seen enough games as a neutral to know what a great game is - and that was just incredibly competitive and entertaining. The crowd was rocking, both teams had great fan turnout, and it was just an incredible night.
I understand NU fans being dejected and I feel bad about that... that was another heartbreaker. They deserve to win one of these eventually. But anyone else whining after a night like that that there's something wrong with the Beanpot and they ought to change the format or invite Maine or play it in Worcester or whatever must either be a sad BU fan or didn't watch the game.
Obviously, the event would have more luster to neutrals if all four teams were winning in a balanced way. But that's very rarely ever happened throughout the event's history. There have always been dynasties but the tradition has persisted. Also, it clearly doesn't appear that NU needs to win a Beanpot to have incredible interest from their students and alumni in attending. If anything, the "this is the year" game drums up interest. The real problem, attendance-wise, is Harvard... and they have no interest in their program at all, Beanpot or no Beanpot, and it's because they're terrible, not because they never win the Beanpot. I bet if they were routinely making NCAA tournaments, they would get better crowds there, even if they end up having a 25+ year drought too. You can't sell "this is the year" to Harvard fans because there's no hope of them being remotely competitive even in a one-off game against Northeastern or BC. (BU, obviously, is a different story.)
