The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

The 1980s was the most even distribution of the pot since then it's been a yawn possibly even for the fans of the two schools that was on their run. Really the NU and Harvard programs SB embarrassed IMO

Early-mid 90's BC, Harvard, and BU all won in the waning days of the Boston Garden. Those were pretty special too.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

i don't agree with that assessment at all. i thought nu had just as many great chances as bc if not more. witt was fine but i don't think he was any better than demko. game winning goal wasn't a fluke either. that was a tremendous play, brown tracked the puck the whole way.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Great for BC. Bad for the tournament.

Hey, I don't think BU fans were complaining when they won their 29th and more than double us and anyone else. BU was so dominant that BC is still 10 behind BU.

Great game by NU and I was pretty quiet on the way home as my brother was fuming that NU lost again.

This used to be a rarity for BC players winning 1 Beanpot per decade, now 2 senior classes have won it each year.

Demko was tremendous and nothing he could do on that rebound that Stevens net for a goal. NU had so many excellent chances to take the lead.

Oh so he intended to be knocked on his behind and deflect it down there...right. Just like it was drawn up. It was a fluke.

That said, that is what happens when you give up 40 shots a night. NU coaching staff cannot think the status quo is okay with an NCAA berth on the line. BC did what it always does against NU, when the 10 minute mark on the 3rd hits, NU runs out of gas as usual and BC wins, nothing new.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

uh, no he didn't intend to get knocked down but he kept his eyes on the puck the entire time and got his stick on it...100% not a fluke. he knew exactly what he was trying to do after being knocked down.

Tournament needs overhaul.
Make these games count in standings or otherwise eliminate the useless consolation game. No more 5pm starts. There is no fun in playing in front of 2k people. I'm not sure how to make that work, but something needs to change. Also, NU and HU should think about winning the tournament once in awhile. It would at least make it interesting.

Kick out Harvard so that A - BU has a chance to win a consolation game and B - 25% of the balcony isn't a barren wasteland. That, or convince them to care.

A couple years ago I would have said kick out NU and HU and add UNH and UMaine. That would destroy the Boston fabric of the tourney though..

What he said. I was thinking a rotating thing, maybe get Lowell, Mack and UMASS involved, but that would be an even weaker event. HVD will be back every 10 or 20 years as any Ivy should, BU will come back to power eventually and NU will be NU, leave it alone.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

I don't disagree that it would add some luster to the tournament for Harv or NU to win one, but year in and year out the championship game ends up being a great college hockey game to watch. No changes needed to this tournament other than 3 teams needing to raise their game.

Can't see UMass, Mack, Lowell being worth the change. But an interesting discussion maybe around changing the 5pm games? It would obviously be much more well attended at a later time. Separate days for the semis and eliminate the consolation game week 2?

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

would love to see the Huskies back at the Garden for the HE Championships.
Also, (on another note), this was brought up by someone a while back.. get rid of the 5pm consolation gm.. & have instead at 5 or 5:30ish the Women's Beanpot Finals before the Mens. Ladies deserve it & it would make for a better 2 games regardless!

I agree the other three teams need to raise their game on the ice, but as for the fan experience and the luster of the tournament atmosphere, EVERY Harvard game is a complete bore. They have very few fans, no students, nothing. They couldn't bother to try and get a few people to show up in the stands to at least make it seem like they care?

I know the structure will never change, but even though BU is going through a slump, and NU couldn't win the thing if you handed it to them, at least the fans still care, the students come out to the games, and it makes for an all around enjoyable atmosphere, as it was tonight.

Consolation game can have implications for the PWR so it should not be eliminated... Attendance at that one will be poor, but if you don't like that, win in week 1.

The first night is more problematic... No easy way to fit 2 games in after work on a weeknight. Not sure about splitting the card into two nights. I think that would be tough on attendance each one of those games would still only be half full I would guess. A while back I think the first game used to start at 6:00, but then the second game starting a after 9:00 was really tough.

don't eliminate it.. take it to the campus(es).. heck it might be better attended. put the women's finals in the 2nd Monday earlier slot. its a win win. (just my opinion).
also, this idea of the women's finals on the 2nd monday.. now I'm not sure where I read it.. or just dreamt it. :)

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

Frustrating to see the tournament still so one-sided, but it's still such a cool event. I'd love to come see it as a neutral fan someday.

Oh god, I can't imagine the consolation hosted on a campus site would draw better... Finding out you are hosting that game a week in advance then having to buy tickets etc when most people have already bought the championship tickets alon with the semi finals tickets?!?!

The womens game idea has been floated around on here before and it does have merit, but I dont know how you can move the consolation game simply from a planning and organizational standpoint.

Re: The 2014 Beanpot: The 25th Times a Charm

We have met the enemy.. & he is indeed us!....

What a crock of crap! What the hell game were you watching anyway? Those kids left everything they had on the ice. You couldn't possibly ask for more and they certainly weren't "the enemy."

Look, I've been through this agony for more years than most of the people on this site have even been alive and it hurts. It always hurts. I'm devastated. Again. But this year I don't feel like going out on I95 and playing in traffic like I have in other years. Two replay calls that didn't go our way and one freaky re-direction that went theirs. End of story.

BTW, this isn't the end of the season.

Enemy is us? C'mon. Have another drink!

Totally. Also, The Game is really uncompetitive these days with Yale football having lost 6 in a row to Harvard. Wouldn't it be more fun to replace Yale in The Game with, like, UConn, just once? Or maybe Army, if we want to keep with old-timey football programs that were around when Harvard started.

That's how traditions work, right?
