The 2013 Tournament Speculation Thread

Re: The 2013 Tournament Speculation Thread

I think he means common opponents in comparing the western teams to get Adrian at 2.

It doesn't really matter. Oswego shouldn't have been a 3E to begin with. It makes sense that they should travel to Adrian. Bummer that they don't get another home game, but that's the way it is.

The common opponent comparison between Adrian and Oswego is not an issue, because it refers to "in region" competition only. Since Oswego and Adrian are in different region, they can't have any common "in-region" opponents. (Because of the distance rule (teams within 100 miles are considered in region, regardless of the boundary), and the conference rule (all conference games are in-region regardless), it's possible to have that kind of comparison in other sports, but because the D3 map is bifurcated the way that it is, that doesn't happen in hockey.

I can't remember. Do all common opponents, regardless of region come into play in the second criteria? I feel like they do. But, I could be wrong.

I think it says "in-region" common opponents. In the secondary criteria everything is in play, but in recent memory we've not seen the secondary criteria used.

I wasn't very clear in my original post, and/or misunderstood your post. I was referring to Adrian winning comparisons witht he other western teams to get to second, then hosting.

The rule is actually 200 miles, but that doesn't much matter since Fredonia is 300 miles from Adrian anyway.

Re: The 2013 Tournament Speculation Thread

I just watched the D3 women's selection show. I was flabbergasted by the number of mistakes made in that selection show.

Re: The 2013 Tournament Speculation Thread

Is flabbergasted really a word?:D, .......I do love it though

Absolutely!

flab·ber·gast transitive verb \ˈfla-bər-ˌgast\
Definition of FLABBERGAST
: to overwhelm with shock, surprise, or wonder : dumbfound
— flab·ber·gast·ing·ly \-ˌgas-tiŋ-lē\ adverb
Examples of FLABBERGAST
It flabbergasts me to see how many people still support them.
<your decision to suddenly quit your job flabbergasts me>
Origin of FLABBERGAST
origin unknown
First Known Use: 1772

It's my all time favorite word in the English language, so I use is sparingly.

I once dated a girl who loved that word, too. I think it was the only thing we had in common. We didn't date very long...

Re: The 2013 Tournament Speculation Thread

Speaking of the Women's DIII, there doesn't seem to be a travel restriction for them, SNC at P'burgh, Elmira at Bowdoin??

Well, Bowdoin-Elmira comes in just under the limit (489 by the NCAA calculator), and with 5 Eastern teams, 3 Western teams, and no Adrian, a flight was inevitable. That said, I believe the women's tourney has indeed eschewed travel restrictions in favor of bracket integrity in the past.

This like way back in the past when there were only 8 teams. With a 5-3 split, we saw Middlebury set out to SNC. With 4 quarterfinal games, there is no way not to have a game across regions and the only way to avoid flights would have been if one of teams in were Adrian, but they didn't get the NCHA auto bid. If they were in, they could have played Elmira. There is a clause which says avoid flights (if possible) which applies there. It is not possible to avoid a flight, so you optimize by sending the lowest West seed to the highest East seed.

Do I have to repeat myself again?

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TRAVEL RESTRICTION!!!!

It is a travel policy which the NCAA strongly -- very strongly -- urges their committees to maintain. But it is NOT a RESTRICTION!

Despite the poll on the NCAA.com Women's D-III homepage, the broadcast did correctly state that RIT wasn't in this year's tournament!

I didn't hear because I was using an iPad and for some reason the NCAA broadcasts have no sound available for tablets.

Elmira to Bowdoin is within 500 miles so there is no issue there.

The West got three teams in as they should have once SNC upset River Falls. Adrian didn't make it so they didn't have the option of busing a "West" team to the East like them could with Adrian to Elmira.

They had to fly someone and SNC got it. Concordia Minn. was the same deal last year.
