Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

Mookie was on FIRE last night.

Would someone please tell the Pats offensive coordinator that not doing anything for 30 minutes at a time is not going to win you football games?

Seems to me the first half problems were more of execution than tactics. They had only three drives; on one they got two first downs, the second they drove the length of the field and Ridley fumbled (big surprise ) and on the third they scored a field goal because Mankins got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

Terrible call but in the grand scheme of things I hope they use this as motivation to beat Denver. Don't understand the offensive playcalling most times. Carolina can't stop the run in the second half so instead of pounding the ball to pick up a half yard they try target Gronk who's obviously triple covered, thus forcing Brady to throw it away? Weak.

As far as the D goes, they have the problem a lot of teams have when they face a running QB, which is a tendancy to chase him around the backfield, only to get burned when he slips away for a 30 yard game. QB's like Newton live for those busted plays. The key is to contain him and they didn't do that but if they see one of these guys again I expect they'll make the proper adjustments.

Oh, and Ridley needs to be benched. Vereen & Blount is your RB combo. You don't need 5 guys playing that position.

Specifically, the 3rd and 1 and they opt to pass instead of running for it after chewing their D up on the ground. W** McDaniels ???

The noncall at the end top off the night. It was not catchable because Kuechly was holding and pushing Gronk away from the thrown ball as people have mentioned.

On a play like that, you wonder if the refs were paid off to make calls like that because that looked so obvious pass interference on 2 counts, face guarding and holding the receiver. I don't understand why Gronk made no effort to make it look it by trying to go back to the ball at least while he's being held or make any dramatics on that play to sell it.

I'm a self-confessed Pat hater and even I think they got jobbed on that call. The contact started way before the ball got there, and definitely took away any chance Gronk would have had to make a play on the ball. Kudos to any Patriots fan saying, "it wasn't just that one call, we didn't play well enough to win" - I admire that self reflection. But the flip side is that Carolina ALSO didn't play well enough to be ahead by more than 4 points, so the game did in fact come down to that one play and the refs botched it badly.

Now, please go out and reflect on this all week and forget to prepare for Denver on Sunday.

:)

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

I really like the announcer (Gruden maybe? I'm not even sure who called the game) openly disagreeing with the ref they found to try and explain the call at the end of the game. Refreshing when somebody calls out the idiocy when it actually happens.

If this was a court case, the precedent would be you can tackle any receiver as long as the ball didn't end up getting close enough to him after he was tackled.

C'mon!!!! You know they make this chit up as they go along!!!

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

At the risk of TBA showing up to point out how I complain about officials, I'm going to say that the refs were hilariously inconsistent last night - to both teams - and the concept of them screwing over one team at the end of the game was far too obvious.

That being said, the lack of points in the first half and the cavalcade of injuries on defense finally caught up with them. Also, what the hell was Talib doing last night? I understand that Smith is a kind of jerk, but the Greco-Roman takedown? Really?

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

Right. The refs said that Gronk was so far away when contact occurred that it made the ball essentially uncatchable, but there's calls in every game of pass interference against someone that the ball isn't even being thrown to. On the complete opposiite side of the field from where the ball is thrown, but those calls get made. Even their excuses for blowing the call are ridiculous.

Actually, I liked Tirico's reaction better. It was something like "Interesting" or "Fascinating." Don't know whether he intended it or not and of course I'm biased, but it came across to me as very sarcastic, sort of like "You can't be serious."

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

Eh. You make your luck. If the Pats had a secondary that didn't have to play every down on the edge of penalties, McCourty doesn't give CAR that crucial first down, CAR doesn't score that late TD, and the game doesn't come down to a judgment call on the final play. And, yeah, that was almost certainly some infraction, whether or not defensive PI applies.

Last night stunk, but in the big picture, the Pats are good. They aren't great. Their record is 7-3. That's about right.

I'm just enjoying the fact that they're playing so competitively. That isn't a Super Bowl roster they went into the season with. It's a tribute to the mediocrity of the AFC-East that it's even a first round at home roster.

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

Just heard the "explanation" that will air on the NFL Network tonight. This clown has several opportunities to say they got the call correct and didn't. In fact, when asked point blank "Did they get the call wrong?" he weasels out by saying they didn't get it wrong because it's a judgement call. Oh, and the official reason the penalty wasn't called is because the holding/interference was simultaneous to the interception. How he was able to say that with a straight face is beyond me.

But the precedent has been set. Next week against Denver, the DBs and LBs can just tackle the Broncos receivers and unless the ball hits the receiver in the hand - hey, uncatchable!

Re: The 2013 New England Patriots

Hope Ridley finds a good seat near a heater, he won't be moving from it any time soon
Didn't take long for the Pats to blow this game
