The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

One speculative reason is that since he's a candidate, it would destroy his candidacy if there's anything illegal in his finances. Of course, if he were not running for office, he could always make a deal to resolve it with the government or IRS. His wife on an interview said, they will release only the minimal tax info and openly said they did not want to open up a can of worms if there is something in their finances that can be openly questioned or found illegal in his holdings, some of which are off shore accounts and the low amount of taxes he's been paying which he said was 13%.

This itself, if true, tells the public how little he pays and why Ryan's policy of giving more tax breaks to the rich would leave a bad taste with the common people or middle class who will be socked with paying higher taxes if the Bush tax cuts end. Most as most of you know, his income is from dividends and something that most people don't have. Many don't even have enough savings for retirement and must continue to work into their 60s or even 70s if many of these policies come into place and if we have another economic downturn or bubble.

Even some of the GOP have asked him to come clean and release more tax returns to come clean, which remains to be seen.

He was a candidate in 2008. I'd be really surprised if there were anything illegal. Besides, what do you think the chances are that he's been audited?

[Edit: most] Capital gains and dividends are taxed at 15% and he lives off of investment income. There's nothing odd or unusual about a 13% tax rate given his level of charitable deductions.

The problem is not with Romney's taxes, the problem is with US income tax law.

That's covered under #2. The perpetual government employment that the GOP guarantees its hardcore base isn't just soldiers, it's all those support functions that keep the wheels turning.

Talk about too big to fail.

Empires do not voluntarily limit themselves, they crash. One positive thing about the inevitable collapse of our empire is that we'll see an enormous reallocation of resources from the public to the private sector.
If the Republic crashes, it will be from the rot within.

Romney was born in Kenya?!

I believe Romney was in fact born in Mexico. Lets see him prove that he wasn't. ;)

I did get a laugh out of the return to the Cold War that Old Pio and his ilk would like to see. There's been a Rambo marathon on cable this week so methinks the old boy is just nostalgic for the 1980's! Apparently the US needs to continue to outspend all other militaries combined, even though our most avowed enemy has no planes, tanks, or ships. We could freeze all new weapons programs and still be able to kick a s s around the world for the next 30 years. A common knuckledragger refrain is Iran closing off the Persian Gulf. How exactly long would it take for the US to obliterate their navy trying to impose this blockade? 3 hours maybe?

Remember, you can take the conservative out of the eighties, but you can't take the eighties out of the conservative!

NOT ALL of them. Only long-term capital gains are 15% (held for LONGER than one year), otherwise it is your highest bracket.

Dividends are only 15% if you hold the stock for 61 days in a period between 60 days before and 60 days after the ex-dividend date, and only if it is a type of dividend that qualifies. Otherwise, it is your highest tax bracket.

Day traders do not get a break. You have to keep your money in the private sector in order to get the better deal.

Iran will block the Red Sea? I doubt Israel, Jordan, or Saudi Arabia will allow access across their nations to Iran. Could be meaning the Persian Gulf or Straits of Hormuz?

You know as well as I do (probably better) that Democrats have no compunction about bringing defense work to their districts, either. *All* incumbents use that as a tool to stay in office - one of the many ways the scales are tilted against challengers.

Re: The 2012 Presidential Election Part I - The guns of August

It's several things.

1. Kickbacks from contractors. The campaign bribes are pretty big. But this reason holds for both parties.

2. Demographics. The military is a welfare plantation for some of the GOP's biggest demo groups.

3. Image. Particularly in the south, G. I. Jesus reins.

4. Ideology. The Neocon worldview has us ever marching for political and economic lebensraum.

Put it all together and the GOP is completely wedded to military spending.

It may just be me, but given your reliably anti-military perspective (dressed up as your Ag College snarkiness, arrogance and pomposity) and your support for anything Obama, and the conditions prevalent in America's major cities, and the political party which benefits from those conditions, I should think you'd avoid using the word "plantation."

Don't forget #5 - jobs/pork. One breakdown I saw (can't find it now) for the F-22 showed that components were being made in ~45 states and nearly 300 congressional districts. That's not by accident.

Certainly not. That's the way the game is played in a democracy. We would have much more efficiency in our military "investments" (if pouring money down inner city rat holes can be called "investments" then so can spending on the F-22) if we had a Central Committee that made the decisions. And no messy concerns about the welfare of our fellow citizens.

If that POS Harry Reid has evidence of a crime ("Romney hasn't paid taxes for a decade") why not drop a dime on Romney with the IRS? That's their job. Just how credible is the suggestion that one of America's richest individuals hasn't paid taxes in ten years and the IRS somehow hasn't noticed. It's not like 5mm is commissioner.

what's funny is if the empire does fall there will be an enormous drop in resources that will not be available for either sector.
