The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I think Freire along with Thor will almost certainly be at the finish if they finish in a bunch.

I am not sure if this is the only reason the Team GC has been played up but his Lanceness and the other Shack riders have been playing it up in their interviews. Paulino even mentioned it after his stage win.

Lance is almost laughing at himself when he mentions they are watching out for the team GC. He looks at the interviewer and wonders "Are you really taking this $hift I'm saying seriously?"

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Vino is just too awesome! It's Astana's tour, others are simply riding around France for fun and health.

I'm not counting Andy out yet. The Pyrenees and the TT are certainly going to favor Contador a bit more, especially since he has a stronger team built for the mountains but anything can happen.

Astana just got their first win as a team today so I wouldn't exactly call it Astana's tour yet. ;)

Plus Radioshack is still leading in the all-important team GC classification that we all know is obviously the biggest prize that everyone is gunning for:cool:

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Contador ticked off Vino yesterday, and then look what happens. :)
Nice win for him, impressive that Cav was able to make it over the final climb and then get 2nd in front of Petacchi.
Thor doesn't have his normal jump in the sprints...he might have to go back on the attack to get the green jersey back.
The points race is uber tight now:

1 Alessandro Petacchi (Ita) Lampre-Farnese Vini 187 pts
2 Thor Hushovd (Nor) Cervelo Test Team 185
3 Mark Cavendish (GBr) Team HTC - Columbia 162

That will go all the way to Paris.

Lance keeps losing time each day. I really don't think he's in that bad of shape...I'm thinking he's saving energy to go for one big stage win. Maybe tomorrow with the summit finish? Or will he wait for Tourmalet?

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Thor has to attack, again, in the mountain, since he doesn't look capable of taking out Peta in Bourdeaux or Paris.

I think this is Conti's to win, and I think Andy should be OK but Menchov and Samu could cause problems IF they stay close.

I'm sure that LA is looing for a stage, ego says Tourmalet, but frankly the Portet d'Aspet stage would seem a fitting stage (#15) as a tribute to Casertelli. Either way I think it is moot, its just not happening.

Finally, my team seems to have overcome the loses of F. Schleck and Cardoso to temporaily grab yellow, lets see if I can hang on.

My guess is this is what you do when you have a brand new team with a brand new American sponsor in the only race that is even remotely on the American sports radar and the GC hopes are over. Not surprising that both Radioshack riders and Versus is playing it up. They have to do something to keep the non-diehard cycling fan's interest.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Vino with another attack holds on and Cav takes second without Renshaw. It will be an interesting fight for the green jersey probably right down to the final stage. So Cav makes it up the final climb but Lance gets dropped:rolleyes:

I'm a Lance hater and I don't even think thats a big deal. He is a domestique now, he needs to save up his energy for the days when he is needed (like tomorrow), and his time today didn't matter. Cavendish needed to stay with the pack today b/c he had hopes of getting a stage win. He'll also put in as little effort as possible tomorrow.

Yeah, it was mentioned a couple of times on a recap about LA saving energy. Looks like someone's hatred is taking over....;)

I don't really know how much of a help Lance would be tomorrow as I expect Saxo Bank will set tempo till the Port de Pailhères and then Saxo and Astana will share the load although both Navarro and Hernandez hit the deck today. Based on the way he has been climbing I expect Lance to be dropped on this climb. I expect the fireworks will start on Ax-3 Domaines and levi will probably only have Kloden and maybe Horner with him.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I suspect it will down to Schleck, Contador and Sanchez again at the front of the race.

Lance/Levi/Kloden would be wise to ride their own pace and hope to keep Menchov in their group. If Levi trys to stay with the big dogs, he will crack worse than Cadel.

If I'm Contador I let everyone go, then just strut by them all on the last kilometer of AX3. Unfortunately I think the race ends tomorrow and the coronation begins.

Where was he the other day when Levi could have used some support on the last climb?

He may be saving energy, but it's for a stage win attempt(the finish on the Columbiere?). Edit: The Tourmalet, not Columbiere.

It's all about Lance.

I would not be surprised to see someone a little down on GC Sastre/Geesink/ Evans? Make a move on Port de Pailhères for the stage win.

Sastre attacks, being dragged by Gustov for a bit.
Nice call. :)

The Astana-led peloton is giving them the space to get an advantage.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Final climb starting soon.
Time to see some fireworks!

Sastre is still up the road a bit (40sec or so), but the rest of the contenders are in the Schleck group. Armstrong (of course), Evans, Wiggins were already dropped.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Welcome to the GC race, Menchov.
Schleck and Contador are just playing games with each other.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

What are/were Andy and Alberto doing there? Interesting race there. Great to see the battle for 3rd and 4th.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

1 Riblon (ALM)
2 Menchov (RAB) +0:54
3 Sanchez (EUS) +0:54
4 Schleck (SAX) +1:08
5 Rodriguez (KAT) +1:08
6 Gesink (RAB) +1:08
7 Contador (AST) +1:08
8 Van Den Broeck (OLO) +1:08
9 Cunego (LAM) +1:49
10 Sastre (CTT) +1:49

Not sure if neither Contador or Schleck had the legs to try to attack each other, so they just let the others dictate the race. Strange with how hard Astana worked. Schleck needs to attack, 31sec isn't going to cut it.

From the post race interview it sounds like Andy is waiting for tomorrow to make his move.
