The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Phew, a rest day in the Giro. Us fans really needed that after two fun days in the mountains. :)
Tomorrow is the mountain TT up the Plan de Corones!

Predictions? I'll go with Sastre with the upset. :)

I'll come from left field and go with Simoni for his farewell Giro stage win.

Looks like Brian is sitting in second through 13 stages at Velogames. While I sit 1465 of 1510.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I've to see Gibo win but I don't see it happening...maybe he'll try and summit the Gavia first and win the Cima Coppi prize?

Tomorrow...hmmmm...I could see Basso, Sastre, Evans, and Cunego win and expect Scarponi and Vino to do good rides too.

I'll go for Basso after his show of strength on Zoncolon. I also seem to recall Contador having some wheel slipping problems when he tried to climb out of the saddle two years ago. It seems to me that Evans is almost always out of the saddle and Basso usually in it. Good enough for me. Weather could change the pick though.

I think Simoni has a shot just because it is so short just 12.9k he doesn't have to ride multiple climbs or do 150km of flats on his old legs before getting to the climb.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Garzelli with a smoking early fast time.
Scarponi is faster at the time check though.
Nibali having a good ride too so far.
This should be a close battle!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Garzelli wins the stage!

1 Stefano Garzelli (Ita) Acqua & Sapone 0:41:28
2 Cadel Evans (Aus) BMC Racing Team 0:00:42
3 John Gadret (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale 0:00:54
4 Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo 0:01:01
5 Michele Scarponi (Ita) Androni Giocattoli 0:01:07
6 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo 0:01:10
7 Rigoberto Uran Uran (Col) Caisse d'Epargne 0:01:36
8 Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) Astana 0:01:37

Arroyo and Porte both held their own. Arroyo still leads GC, with Basso now in 2nd, Porte in 3rd, and Evans in 4th.

1. Arroyo (GCE)
2. Basso (LIQ), at 2:27
3. Porte (SAX), at 2:36
4. Evans (BCM), at 3:09
5. Sastre (CTT), at 4:36
6. Nibali (LIQ), at 4:53
7. Vinokourov (AST), at 5:12
8. Scarponi (AND), at 5:25

Nice. I never really thought Garzelli had a shot. I did figure he'd have a shot tomorrow but...

Speaking of tomorrow, the finishing climb doesn't look that bad, though there is a nasty ramp about 3 K from the finish. I figure it goes down one of two ways. Either Liquigas wants to try and take time from Evans/Arroyo or they want to conserve. If the latter, then this stage has break written all over it. A perfect chance for Gibo! He only finished 8 minutes down on Zoncolon and is over 2 hours back. So he still can climb reasonably well, not well enough to win from the bunch but spot him a few minutes and he may be able to make it happen. Obviously if Liquigas wants to push that doesn't happen...How about Cunego from a group of favorites?

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

3 of us in the top 40 at Velogames. Good showing from the USCHO crowd.

I was looking at your team and it looks like we have so much in common it ends up being my Goss, Sastre, and Cunego vs. your Evans, Simoni, Szmyd, and Tasatto.

Since Evans gifted Sastre 10+ minutes and has already passed him, I think your going to end up in 2nd.

I'm still pretty happy with my guys though. Maybe Cunego and Satre will show a bit of life this last week.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I definitely should have picked someone other than Simoni. I figured he might want to do something glorious in his last tour, and go out that way, but should have figured instead his Lampre signing was more ceremonial than anything else, and he was undertrained.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Kind of a boring finish to that stage.
They had Arroyo and Porte isolated and the field was strung out but no one wanted to make the attack to split it up.
I would have thought we'd see some moves from Basso/Evans. They are running out of stages to get that time back on Arroyo. Tomorrow is a flat/sprint stage.

Good win for Monier. He's not the smoothest on the bike, but he got the job done. :)

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I agree Basso should have thrown in an attack but...
I thought that Hondo had a great ride, though a bit confusing why he'd try the day before the sprint stage. I just know that Lampre wanted Simoni to get away.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

The Gorilla gets one! Lots of work from HTC and Sky and Griepel finally got it done.

Heard some talk that the Gavia may get snowed/avalanched out. And that the Giro's backup plan is to climb the Moritrolo from the other side and then finish on the Tonale. I doubt it happens but that would be interesting.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Greipel gets the win ahead of Dean, Sabatini, Henderson, Hondo, and Brown.

Nice win for Greipel, he had a good little gap. Dean showed that he still has some sprinting power left in those legs when he's not leading out Farrar.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Pretty awesome stage going on. Nibali is the strongest, but is fully committed to Basso. Arroyo getting no love.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Thought Arroyo might save the jersey after that risky descent but he just died on the final climb. Obviously Vino, Sastre and Evans weren't feeling too well either as I assume they would have attacked Arroyo on the final climb. Wonder if Scarponi will regret not working too hard in the break if he ends of the podium by a few seconds as Evans, Basso, Nibali and Vino can all TT better than him., he has to get more time tomorrow to have a chance at the podium.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I think Scarponi still podiums, at Arroyo's expense. The final TT is only 15 KM and is quite hilly. I doubt he loses any real time to Arroyo, he isn't taking time from Nibali. Tomorrow, Scarponi should he right there over the Gavia and likely get get his time there.

There was a good quote from Savio, Scarponi's DS, admitted that what you saw wasn't romantic cycling but it was practical. And that was Scarponi gave was the best he could do. If he'd had his preference, Scarponi would have attacked on the climb to Aprica. But...

The climb of the Mortirlo was 8 sec faster than in '06 when Simoni and "ET" went over. Then "ET" screwed Simoni...

Gibo to summit the Gavia first tomorrow!
