The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I'm going to be so disappointed in the tour, aren't I?

Nibali is an animal! GC is slowly starting to shake out.

I have a feeling that the Tour is going to pale in comparison excitement-wise compared to this Giro. It will be Astana/Saxo/RadioShack/etc trying to control the race and bringing their GC favorites to the bottom of the climb all together.
This Giro is awesome so far, and the climbing has just begun!

The real winner today was Basso. Nibali, Evans, Scarponi, Vino, etc all used up a lot of energy reserves today. Basso just sat on Evans/Scarponi's wheels and then went around them with 100m to go. He's fresh comparatively to them. And with a HUGE summit finish tomorrow, that could make a big difference.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Looks like I've been brainwashed about bike racing after so many years of watching Disco/USPS/Astana/RS and forgot that you can actually make bold attacks on non-finishing climbs. GREAT RACING! I'm going to be so disappointed in the tour, aren't I?

Nibali was VERY strong at last years tour and his efforts were wasted on Basso. I'm fully converted now to enjoying this Giro and one day races. I love it when the heavy weights try to kick each others asses on the stages vs. just seeing how long they can hold Contador's (or Lance's in the past) wheel.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I just want to take a minute to pray to God, Allah, Zeus, Jupiter, whoever I need to to see Gibo summon up the form to win tomorrow. That would make this Giro simply the best!

Aside from that Basso or maybe Scarponi for the win. Unless Sastre has been playing the best game of brinksmanship ever.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I can see Liquigas trying to do the same thing tomorrow, only launching Basso this time.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Great Giro Stage despite the commentary, online do you still have to listen to Schlager and Go Go? They kept saying why they didn't know why Liquigas was attacking as they couldn't take the jersey why don't they wait to attack tomorrow? If you are 12 minutes behind you have to take the time when you can get it not hope to gain 12 minutes in 1 day.

Very surprising to see Nibali attack on the descent and stay away. It will be interesting to see what Liquigas does tomorrow, especially with a full complement of riders.

Very glad that Levi didn't take the lead in the Tour of California today. Great ride by Rogers to keep the jersey and with Voight sitting 4th I doubt tomorrow will be a casual ride to the finish should be some attacks.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Yeah, like how the other day, they couldn't figure out why Liquigas and some of the other teams weren't working to chase down that 50 man break, so the chase wasn't organized or working hard.

Because those teams had guys in the break, and they weren't gonna work just to bring Cadel Evans back to the front. They should have been explaining that to us, instead of constantly wondering why the chasers weren't organized.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

No more Farrar. Both Tyler and McEwen didn't start today's monster stage.
Today should be some fireworks on the last climb!
Zoncolan!

:)

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

I've been watching on either Eurosport (on days when they have English Audio, Sean Kelly is awesome), or the gazzetta site.

Not even to the Zoncolon yet and the "peloton" is only about 40 riders. This could be a bloodbath.

ETA: Doh! Looks like Gibo is dropped. Also Tondo looks to be gone.

When Unisport first started showing cycling I hoped they would just steal the Eurosport feed and have their announcers as I had seen their coverage before when I was in Europe and liked their announce team. Unfortunately they hired these two jokers and while I love that they show 2-3 hours a day I don't like having to deal with them. Maybe they will get better who knows, usually the only time I turn up the audio is when they have Andrew Hood the Velo News correspondent on.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Everyone is dropped except for Basso and Evans.
Scarponi is just a bit back.

Looks like Basso conserved nicely yesterday, as he looks very good today.
Nibali...not so much, he is over a minute back already.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Wow, huge crowds on the Zoncolan.
Basso is making up huge time on everyone.

Basso, Evans, Scarponi...

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Arroyo keeps pink and Porte still in 2nd, but Basso moves up to 3rd.
Over 6 hours in the saddle today. And this Giro still has a very tough week left!

Also best day for my fantasy team, after a Sastre-like start. 5 of the top ten today and 4 of the top 11 on GC.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Today went pretty much as I expected from Liquigas, suspected they would launch Basso over Nibali but wasn't sure. Great ride by Basso: Sastre, Vino, Scarponi and Evans look to be the other top contenders but as with everything this Giro you every know.

Re: The 2010 Cycling Thread!

Congrats to Mick Rogers for winning his first "Grand Tour" (Sherwin)! LL and DZ made it interesting but I'm really not sure what the Shack was doing during the last few K.

I wonder if they were hoping that Rogers and Zibriskie would mark Levi and Horner could get a minute ahead take the stage with the time bonus and win. A long shot yes but Zabriskie and Rogers had already marked all of Levi's moves.

I thought that was possible, but it seemed that Popo and LL were pulling in the final few K. I got the sense that LL was trying to defend his position.
